Oklahoma! takes center stage in Granbury: A must-see production

BY MICKY SHEARON

Granbury Theatre Company’s latest production, the beloved musical "Oklahoma!," will light up the stage at the Historic Granbury Opera House from Friday, Aug. 9 through Sunday, Sept. 8. This iconic musical, known for its rich history and enduring popularity, will run for five weekends, promising audiences a nostalgic yet fresh theatrical experience.

A HISTORIC MUSICAL

"Oklahoma!" first premiered on Broadway in 1943, marking a significant shift in American musical theatre. Written by the legendary duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, it was the first “book musical,” integrating songs, dances and dialogue to advance the story. This innovative approach set the standard for future musicals and established the Golden Age of American musical theatre.

ACCOLADES AND LEGACY

"Oklahoma!" has earned numerous accolades over the years, solidifying its place in musical theater history. The original Broadway production won a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for its contributions to the American theatre. Additionally, the 1955 film adaptation won two Academy Awards and was inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural significance. These honors underscore the musical's impact and its enduring legacy.

Director Bentleigh Nesbit, who helms the Granbury production, reflects on the musical’s groundbreaking impact: “Oklahoma was written in the early 1940s, more than 80 years ago. It was the very first ‘book musical,’ meaning that it was the first time using the book, music and dancing to propel the story. For a show written that long ago, the characters are all so complex and have so many layers.”

WHY 'OKLAHOMA!' ENDURES

The enduring popularity of "Oklahoma!" can be attributed to its universal themes and memorable music. The story, set in the early 1900s, centers on the romantic entanglements of Curly, a cowboy, and Laurey, a farm girl, amidst the backdrop of Oklahoma’s impending statehood. The narrative intertwines humor, romance and drama, creating a timeless appeal.

The music of "Oklahoma!" is another key factor in its lasting success. Songs like "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," and the titular "Oklahoma!" have become standards in the American musical repertoire. These songs, with their catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics, continue to resonate with audiences of all ages.

GRANBURY THEATRE COMPANY'S PRODUCTION

Granbury Theatre Company’s rendition of "Oklahoma!" promises to honor the original while bringing a fresh perspective. Nesbit, assistant director Kendrick Booth and music director Ashley Green lead a talented artistic team. Choreographer Sofi Warren, fight and intimacy choreographer Austin Bender-Davis and scenic designer Eme Looney add their expertise to create an immersive theatrical experience.

Nesbit emphasizes the balance of tradition and innovation: “My vision for the show was how I think you must approach any Golden Age show. Oklahoma is the original Golden Age musical, and it's so influential. How can I respect what it was and what it is but also find ways to make it relevant without changing anything?”

The lead cast features Jake Hamilton as Curly, Emily Farmer as Laurey, Thomas Powderly as Jud Fry, Jacob Myers as Will Parker, Hannah Horton as Ado Annie Carnes, Kate Rongey as Aunt Eller, and Alvaro Aguilar as Ali Hakim. These actors bring depth and vitality to their roles, capturing the complexities of their characters.

BRINGING THE SHOW TO LIFE

The scenic and artistic design play a crucial role in transporting audiences to early 20th century Oklahoma. Head scenic artist Reagan Deming, costume designer Tiffany Wynne, hair and makeup designer Colton Lively, propmaster Jarrett Self, lighting designer Whitney Shearon, and sound designer James Stack contribute to the production’s authenticity and visual appeal.

The team’s collaborative efforts ensure that every element, from the lush costumes to the intricate set design, enhances the storytelling. This attention to detail helps to create an engaging and believable world for the audience to step into.
