A few weeks ago, my wife and our daughter stopped by the local Starbucks—not for coffee, but just to sit and talk. Or at least, that was the plan. The shop had recently finished a renovation, and to our surprise, most of the seating was gone. What was once a casual gathering spot felt more like a glorified to-go counter. And it got me thinking: why does it feel like so many places are quietly pushing us to leave?
