Acton Donuts, a local business in Granbury, is now back in operation after a tumultuous year. The shop, located at 3101 Fall Creek Highway, faced significant challenges following a car crash in December 2023 that damaged the building and disrupted the business.
Owned by Okju and Sehwan Chun since 1998, Acton Donuts has been a staple in the community for over two decades. The couple, originally from Korea, seized the opportunity to purchase the shop from its previous owners shortly after moving to the United States. They have been dedicated to serving the community since, seven days a week, from 5 a.m. to noon.
"Our typical day starts early," said Sehwan Chun. "I wake up around midnight to prepare and make the donuts, and Okju arrives around 4 a.m. to open the shop." Their hard work has paid off, as the shop is known for its delicious classic glazed and chocolate donuts and savory options like croissant sandwiches and sausage rolls.
The fateful day of Dec. 7, 2023, began like any other. "It was around 9 a.m. I was working on a customer in the drive-thru, and Sehwan was in the middle of the shop preparing dough. Suddenly, we heard a loud sound, and debris was flying everywhere," recalled Okju Chun. A truck traveling at approximately 80 mph (they later learned) crashed into their shop, destroying the back area where equipment and ingredients were stored. The truck had first struck a car in the drive-thru before plowing through the building and narrowly missing Sehwan Chun.
This incident was one of several serious challenges for the Chuns. Earlier, in March 2023, a small electrical fire forced them to close for three months due to contamination and lack of parts. The fire caused minor exterior damage, but the smoke led to the loss of most of their inventory.
Despite these setbacks, the Chuns' resilience and the support of their loyal customers have been unwavering. "The most difficult part of running our business has been the language barrier," Okju Chun explained. "We would love to interact more fluently with our customers, but we are grateful for their support."
As they prepare to reopen in early June, the Chuns look forward to welcoming back their community. "We are just grateful for our longtime customers and new ones. They tell us how great our donuts taste, and that reassures us we are doing well. We love to see our customers happy," said Okju Chun.
The reopening of Acton Donuts marks a new chapter for the Chuns and their business, filled with hope and gratitude for the community that has supported them through thick and thin.
