Linda Ruth Stevens Huchel 1948 – 2025

Posted

With profound gratitude to the people who made her life the wonderful journey that it was, Linda Ruth Stevens Huchel, affectionately known by some as “Lucky Linda,” 77, returned home to God. Born in 1948 in Newark, New Jersey, Linda lived a life grounded in faith, service and joy. She is reunited in heaven with her husband of over 50 years, Richard John Huchel.

Linda attended Montclair State College in New Jersey, where she majored in elementary education with an emphasis in physical education. It was there she met Richard in a criminology class, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with travel, community and shared purpose.

A devoted Catholic, Linda lived her faith through service. She was an avid substitute teacher at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Elementary School in Oceanside, California, and volunteered with CASA, after-school programs, and Interim HealthCare of Granbury Hospice, offering warmth, steadiness, and a helping hand wherever she was needed.

Linda loved travel, playing tennis, dominoes, dancing, attending theatre, and friendly competition, often winning with her trademark phrase, “Old age and treachery over youth and vigor!” She was known for keeping conversations light and people happy, bringing cheer and encouragement into everyday moments.

Linda is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Baligad, Sarah Huchel and Abigail Hoiland; and her grandchildren, Aiden, Sebastian and Gwendolyn, who brought her great pride and joy. The family extends sincere thanks to all who supported and prayed for Linda. It is with sadness and gratitude that we remember a life that brought cheer, movement and light to all who knew her.

UT Southwestern Medical Center carried out the cremation service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause Linda supported regularly and that was important to her.

Special thanks to Interim HealthCare of Granbury Hospice and to the many friends who offered support and prayers.
