James Calaway was born March 29, 1940, to William Edgar “Ed” Calaway and Myrtle “Pearl” Calaway Hall in Longview. James died Jan. 25, 2025, at the age of 84 years, in Granbury.
A funeral service will be held at 11a.m. Monday, Feb. 3 at the Wiley’s Funeral Home, 400 East U.S. Highway 377, Granbury, with visitation prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
A graveside service and burial with military honors will follow right after the funeral service at the Acton Cemetery.
James was married to Barbara Jean Calaway until her death in January 2014. James spent the last 10 years in a loving friendship with Sherry Gregory.
James joined the Army in 1963 at the age of 23. After his service, James returned to his hometown and spent the rest of his life in Granbury.
James retired from his career as a truck driver. Three months after his retirement, he began his dream job: transporting visitors on the city’s iconic green trolley. He loved being a tour guide and he enjoyed sharing stories about Granbury. Using James’ own words: “I want people to be happy. I’m a happy person myself. We aren’t all born rich, and I certainly wasn’t, but I learned a long time ago to enjoy life.”
James was preceded in death by his father, William Edgar “Ed” Calaway; mother, Myrtle “Pearl” Calaway Hall; wife, Barbara Jean Calaway; brothers Harris “Edwyne” Calaway and wife Shirley and Gerald Wayne Calaway and wife Betty; and nephew, Mark Wayne Calaway.
James is survived by his son, James Timothy “Tim” Calaway; partner Sherry Gregory’ niece Dianna Calaway Robertson and husband Patrick; adopted grandchildren Jackie and Lejla Gregory; and numerous cousins, great nieces and nephews.
