Gayle Sargent Meyer Nye 1939 - 2025

Posted

Gayle Sargent Meyer Nye was born Jan. 10, 1939, in Fort Worth, Texas, to JD and Bessie Fitzhugh Sargent. She died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, in Granbury, Texas. Gayle attended Tolar schools and graduated in 1957. She married Edwin Max Meyer on June 1, 1957. They had three sons, Mendel, James and Aaron.

Gayle and Max raised their three boys on the farm in Tolar, truly making it a family affair. She instilled in them the value of hard work and the ability to see the accomplishments that come from it and because of that her legacy will live on. Gayle had a zest for life and it was apparent to anyone who knew her. She was up for a challenge and never turned down an opportunity to go shopping. She had a wealth of knowledge and would share it with anyone who asked and sometimes even if you didn’t ask. Her personality shined throughout her life and brought joy to all who knew and loved her. Gayle never met a stranger but her family was her pride and joy, especially her grandchildren. When she was able she could be found in the stands of whatever sport or activity they were involved in, cheering them on. She was a member of the Tolar Methodist Church and attended the Cowboy Church in Granbury.

Gayle has had many professions in her lifetime and was never scared to take on new opportunities. She began hauling cattle to the Fort Worth Stockyards by herself when she was 13 years old. She owned and operated three restaurants in Tolar between 1974 and 1980. She was an amazing cook, and anyone who has had the privilege of a meal she prepared would agree. She opened Gayle’s Quick Stop, the first convenience store in Tolar. She had a women’s clothing store which she operated for several years. Gayle had a true servant’s heart and opened, in her home, an assisted living residence that she lovingly called “The Retreat,” which she ran for eight years. She was the first female school board member at Tolar ISD as well as the first female mayor in Tolar. She served her time on the school board and as mayor with honesty and integrity and on occasion ruffled a few feathers. She worked diligently to improve the town she deeply loved hoping to prepare it for the growing pains she knew were coming. She was instrumental, during her term as Mayor, in the building of the water tower.

She is preceded in death by her parents, JD and Bessie; her spouse of 43 years, Max Meyer; spouse of eight  years, Harold Nye; son, Mendel Meyer, and his wife, Ginger; and brother-in-law, Stan Weinberg.

She is survived by sons, Jay Meyer and wife Attice of Tolar, and Aaron Meyer and wife Terri of Tolar; adopted son, John Williams of Tolar; grandchildren, Rusty Rushing, Angie Lasley, Avery Meyer, McKinley Rodriguez and Kyli Meyer; six great-grandchildren; sister, Delores Weinberg and her family; as well as other loving family members and friends.
