County declares Aug. 21 Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day

Posted

The Hood County Commissioners Court officially designated Wednesday, Aug. 21, as Hood County Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, during a regularly scheduled meeting earlier this week.

As stated in the proclamation read by Hood County Substance Abuse Council Executive Director Harley Walts, Aug. 21 has been designated as the national day for fentanyl prevention and awareness. This day serves to honor those who have lost their lives to illicit fentanyl poisoning and to recognize the profound impact the drug has had on countless family members and friends.

The initiative aligns with coordinated efforts from various fentanyl awareness organizations and families affected by the epidemic. By sharing their lived experiences, these groups aim to educate the public, especially youth, about the dangers of fentanyl and the importance of seeking help.

Hood County has witnessed a troubling rise in fentanyl overdoses, some of which have resulted in fatalities. In response, the court wishes to recognize those affected locally by the tragedy of fentanyl and bring awareness to the prevention resources available in the community.

The proclamation was signed by all members of the Hood County Commissioners Court Aug. 13, highlighting a united effort to raise awareness and promote prevention resources.
