Steven Schmidt was approved by the Granbury school board Monday night to be the next head coach of the Granbury Lady Pirates basketball team. He comes to GHS after being the head girls basketball coach at Eastland the past three seasons, leading the Lady Mavericks to bidistrict this past season. He coached Argyle to a Class 2A state championship in 2006 and to the 3A state finals in 2009. Schmidt takes over for Leta Andrews, who is retiring at the end of the school year as the winningest basketball coach of all time with 1,416 victories.
“It’s a humbling experience to come into a program with this kind of tradition,” said Schmidt via telephone Monday night. “I’m not trying to fill anyone’s shoes. I’m not trying to replace Leta.”
