Murder charge filed against officer who killed Pecan man

The Mesa, Arizona police officer who shot and killed Pecan Plantation resident Daniel Shaver in January is now charged with second-degree murder in the case, Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said Friday. That’s according to an online article on and other reports. The officer, Philip Mitchell Brailsford, has been on administrative leave during the investigation, which found that “the use of deadly physical force was not justified,” and that Shaver was unarmed. A lawyer for Shaver’s widow, Laney Sweet, recently filed an $18 million notice of claim for a wrongful death in the case.
