Jury to sentence man accused of suffocating ailing wife

An Arlington man faces up to 20 years in prison after using a pillow to suffocate his ailing wife at an Abe’s Landing residence north of Granbury in March 2017, prosecutors say. Joseph Scala was 72 when he killed his wife, Betty Scala, also 72, police said. A jury has been hearing testimony this week in the Hood County Justice Center. The jury will determine the sentence after Scala pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He was originally charged with murder but prosecutors agreed to the guilty plea of the lesser charge.
