Fire marshal: Have safe New Year’s celebration if using fireworks

Hood County Fire Marshal Ray Wilson is urging residents to use caution if using fireworks to celebrate New Year’s Eve tonight, and New Year’s Day tomorrow – outside the city limits only, of course, where it’s legal. His fire safety tips include: consider the area where the fireworks may be launched and where they may land; have an adequte water supply available in case a fire starts; and make sure any grass is mowed down short. Wilson also noted that it’s against Brazos River Authority (BRA) rules and regulations to shoot any fireworks in a BRA park, or over the lake. He said that grasses and other vegetation that has begun to die or become dormant can easily catch fire.
