Authorities: Inmate who killed wife attempts suicide

A Hood County Jail inmate attempted suicide Wednesday night after he was sentenced to 20 years in prison earlier in the day for suffocating his wife, authorities said. Jail staff discovered that Joseph Scala, 74, who was on suicide watch, had pulled a medical device from his body and shoved an object into the port that caused bleeding. He was transported to a Fort Worth hospital and is refusing medical treatment, according to Hood County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Johnny Rose. The Hood County Sheriff’s Office has an officer with Scala.
