Tolar track sending 24 to area

April 12, 2014

Next season the Tolar track program will be moving to a new district and classification.

It’s a good bet the rest of District 10-2A won’t be complaining.

For a fourth consecutive year a Tolar team won district, this time the Rattlers as they scored 185 points to easily outdistance runner-up Whitney with 136.

The Lady Rattlers were fourth in their division, scoring 98 points. Godley won with 158.

The Rattlers and Lady Rattlers also combined to qualify 24 competitors for the Area 9/10-2A Meet in Boyd Wednesday (13 boys, 11 girls).

The top four finishers in each event at district advanced, as will the top four finishers in each event at area move on to the Region II Meet in Stephenville April 25-26.

“It was a really good couple of days, really good,” said a smiling Tolar coach Gregg Lee. “Two goals we always have are win district and send as many as we can past district.”

This was the second consecutive season in which the Tolar boys brought home the championship. In 2011 and 2012 it was the Lady Ratlers who took the top spot in the team standings.

Garrett Winston led all Tolar qualifiers by advancing to area competition in five events. He won the triple jump with an effort of 44-4.75 feet, and was second in the long jump, along with running a leg of all three qualifying relays (400 meter, 800, 1600).

Dalton Shaw qualified in four events, taking third in high jump and 300 hurdles, and fourth in the long jump and 110 hurdles.

For the Lady Rattlers, Tristyn Klein and Meg Gilliam qualified in three events each. Klein captured a silver medal in the discus, a bronze in the 400, and ran a leg of the runner-up 1600 relay. Gilliam was also on that relay, along with the third-place 800 relay and the fourth-place 400 relay.

Also winning gold medals for the Rattlers were 2013 state qualifier Rodie Brister in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, Walker Shelton in the long jump (21-5.75) and Colt Jones in the 800 (2:07.74).

Three-time state qualifier Reagan Mabery won district again in the pole vault, topping 11 feet, the Lady Rattlers’ lone gold medal.

Tolar had multiple qualifiers in eight events.

“They’ve got the mentality that you might beat one of us, but not all of us,” said Lee. “Somebody else might win the gold, but we’re going to finish second, third and fourth.”

Both the boys and girls were competing without one of their top athletes.

The girls were without senior Shelby Newton, who holds school records in the 100, 200, 400, and as part of all three relays. She injured her knee during practice shortly before district.

The boys were missing junior Kaleb Gilliam, who injured a ligament in his foot, also shortly before district.

“I hate it that Shelby is a senior and didn’t get to compete,” said Lee. “Kaleb can come back strong next year, but we will miss Shelby. She has done a lot of great things for this program.”
