Tolar, GHS athletes academic all-state

May 28, 2014

Not only is Reagan Mabery one of the top athletes in Texas, she is also one of the smartest.

The Tolar pole vaulter, who recently made her fourth consecutive appearance at the Class 2A State Track and Field Meet, was named Class 2A Academic All-State by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

At Granbury High, 21 athletes from three sports were honored as Class 4A academic all-state. The list included 11 soccer players, eight swimmers, and two softball players.

“It just shows you athletics is not for dummies,” said Granbury athletic director Dwight Butler. “Top athletes can also be top students. You can do both.”

Butler said 16 of the top 25 students academically in the graduating class this year are athletes. This includes valedictorian Rachael Rodgers and salutatorian Riley Summer.

Swimmers receiving honors from the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association are Hayden Coppenbarger, Kady Hare, Estefania Magallanes, Hannah Morton, Joel Reid, Cole Rezsofi, Rachael Rodgers and Luke Travis.

The Granbury boys and girls swim team won district this season.

Girls soccer players recognized by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches are Ariel Davila, Courtney Heathington, Hannah Hiler, Evan Jefferson, Maggie McKenna, Lily Middleton, Kelci Slaughter and Jayci Welch.

Boys soccer players honored included Fernando Aguado-Espinoza, Christian Carnes and Nate Colley.

The Pirates advanced two rounds in the playoffs, while the Lady Pirates missed a postseason berth on the final day of the regular season.

From the Lady Pirates softball team, Rayla Helci and Maci Samuelson were selected by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. They also helped their team to its highest district finish ever, taking second in District 7-4A.

Tolar pole vaulting coach Scotty Miller said gaining recognition as academic all-state is also a valuable recruiting tool.

“College teams have to maintain high academic standards to keep scholarships in the program,” he said.

Butler said much credit should also go to the families.

“A lot of this comes from the support of families and parents,” he said. “They don’t need to be left off the thank you list.”
