Registration has begun for the second SFC Riley G. Stephens Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K and Fun Run Saturday, Sept. 27 in Tolar.
In addition to the 5K and Fun Run, $1 tickets can be purchased for a drawing for a quilt, handmade by Lucy Esposito.
The event honors the memory of Army Sgt. 1st Class Riley Stephens, a Tolar High School graduate who was a Special Forces Green Beret killed in action in Afghanistan on Sept. 28, 2012.
Last year the Memorial Run events raised enough for one full scholarship and four $1,000 scholarship awards, according to organizer JoAnn Stephens, wife of Riley’s father Mic Stephens and stepmother of Riley.
She said that, weather permitting, they will also try to stage a car show for the event, which will be based at Tolar High School, 301 Rock Church Highway.
The early entry fee for the 5K is $25 and will increase to $30 after Sept. 20. The run will begin at 5 p.m. T-shirts are guaranteed to all early registration entrants prior to Sept. 20. Packet pickup and late registration on the day of the event starts at 4 p.m.
For the Fun Run, packet pickup and late registration starts at 4 p.m. on the day of the event. T-shirts are guaranteed to all who register early. The Fun Run starts at 4:30 p.m. The fee is $15 with a T-shirt and $10 without one.
