FORT WORTH – The Granbury Pirates played their final sporting event in District 7-4A Friday, dropping a baseball game at Arlington Heights, 3-2.
However, the Pirates received a going-away present from another Fort Worth school, Trimble Tech.
The Bulldogs upset Aledo 2-0 on that same night. That dropped the Bearcats to third place and left the Pirates (17-9, 11-3 in 7-4A) alone in second place in the final standings.
Arlington Heights (16-8, 13-1) won district, with the Yellowjackets’ lone league loss being 5-2 at Granbury.
“We’ll have to high-five those guys at the district meeting,” Granbury coach Brad Eppler said of Trimble Tech, smiling.
The outcome set up the Pirates for a best-of-three bidistrict series against Burleson Centennial (14-14). The Spartans, coached by former Granbury coach Brad Hart, finished third in District 8-4A.
“It should be fun,” said Eppler, who was Hart’s assistant with the Pirates before Hart left for Centennial last summer.
“Good team. Well-coached. Should make for a good series,” said Hart of the Pirates.
“The sun comes up. We played well,” said Eppler. “We’ll have a good week of practice and get ready for a big series against Centennial.
The Pirates took an early 2-0 lead when Matthew Hickey doubled home a pair of runs in the top of the second. Heights came back with two runs in the bottom, and things stayed tied until the fifth, when Josh Soward’s run-scoring single provided the margin of victory.
