Chris Eikenhorst has come home.
The former Happy Hill assistant coach is now the head coach and athletic director at Cornerstone Christian Academy.
His return came via stops at Glenview Christian School and High Point Academy, where he enjoyed much success.
“We lived in Saginaw six years, but this always felt like home,” said Eikenhorst. “We still have our Fossil Rim passes. My son was born here.”
Eikenhorst replaced Bobby Johnson, who left to work in public relations at Fort Worth Nazarene. Tyler Johnson, the heir apparent, also left to pursue a career in private business.
“It’s hard to replace the team of Bobby and Tyler Johnson, but Chris is a fantastic addition for us,” said Cornerstone administrator Marci Martinez.
“He’s a players coach, a non-nonsense guy. He’s got a good rapport with his players.
“We built a great reputation with Bobby and Tyler, and we’ll continue to grow with Chris.”
Along with football, Eikenhorst will coach boys basketball, baseball and track at Cornerstone.
Eikenhorst was an assistant at Happy Hill (now North Central Texas Academy) from 2004-08. He coached basketball and track, and was defensive coordinator for the football team that finished second in the state in 2004.
During his time at Glenview, he was head basketball and baseball coach, becoming the athletic director and head football coach.
His basketball teams reached the Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship (TCAF) State Tournament all three years. He also led his baseball team to a state final, and his 2010 football team reached the state semifinal round.
Glenview closed, and he moved to High Point. His 2013 basketball team won a TCAF state crown and reached the semifinals in 2012.
The 2011 and 2012 football teams reached the state finals. He started the baseball program, going from one victory in the first season to making the playoffs last season.
At Cornerstone, Eikenhorst inherits a football program that has reached the playoffs and advanced in each of its three varsity seasons. Last season the Crusaders switched to TCAF after two seasons in the Texas Christian Athletic League.
The basketball team finished second in the state last season and reached state the season before.
