Shauna Coleman and Lanie Roberts are from a very small town, but they are growing quite familier with the big city of Austin.
Coleman, a senior at Lipan, will be making her fourth trip to the state capital. Roberts, a sophomore, will be making her third.
Coleman has made three trips to state with the Lady Indians’ basketball team, one of which was this past season, along with Roberts.
Now, Coleman will be making the journey in track after qualifying in the 300-meter hurdles at the Class A Division II Region III Meet in Bullard this past weekend.
“She’s so excited about it, especially after not competing at regionals last year,” said Lipan coach Ray Michou.
Coleman’s finals time was 52.07 seconds. She posted the top qualifying time in preliminaries, a personal-best 50.8.
Roberts qualified in two events. She is making a return trip in the 800 run after clocking a personal-best 2 minutes, 31 seconds. She also qualified for the first time in the 1600 with another personal-best time of 5:44.
“Lanie was thinking of not running the 800 and focusing on the 1600 because she thought she could win that in Austin,” said Michou.
“I asked her, ‘How are you going to feel if you don’t qualify in the mile (1600) and drop the 800 and wind up not going in either?’
“She decided to run both, and now she’s going in both.”
The top two finishers in each event received automatic qualification to state.
Lipan had three other top-five finishes. Shelby Bontke took fourth in the high jump, and Catherine Thormann was fourth in the 3200 and fifth in the 1600.
As a team, the Lady Indians finished fourth with 46 points.
“We did that with just six girls,” said Michou. “We had good all-around scoring.
“We are all extremely prouod of the kids. It was a great experience for them, and we are excited about what Lanie and Shauna might accomplish in Austin.”
The top finishers for the Lipan boys were Derrick, seventh in discus, and Cameron Earles, seventh in 400.
