HCN/First Tee golf champs crowned

August 16, 2014

The Hood County News/First Tee Junior Golf Championship had a new home this summer, but the end product was a familiar one – fun.

Zach Wall captured the overall boys championship trophy for the three-part series, and Madeline Phillips was the overall girls champion.

The tournament, now played at the par-72 Granbury Country Club course, is for ages 18 and under. The series began in June. The second round was in July.

First Tee focuses on teaching youngsters how to play the sport, as well as how to show sportsmanship.

Wall, about to be a senior at Granbury High School, has been on the Pirate varsity since his freshman year.

He said winning the overall series trophy was “pretty cool.”

His average of an even-par 72 after Wednesday’s final round clinched the overall crown. Noah Doucette was second overall with a 76 average, while Brady Wright was third at 77.

Wall noted that not only are Doucette and Wright his GHS teammates, all three live in the same area in deCordova.

Phillips played in the first tournament of the series, but not the second, held in July. She didn’t realize there would be a trophy for the overall winner, but was “excited” when she found out Wednesday.

“It was fun to win, but it’s more important to play with my buddies on the team,” Wall said. “We pretty much play or practice every single day with each other. We make each other better.”

Phillips, 16, will be a junior at GHS this year.

“It was just fun because I got to play with my friends,” said Phillips, who was on the varsity as a sophomore.

She said the highlight of Wednesday’s competition was on Hole 8, a par 5 on which she made a long putt for bogey.

“You go uphill, which is pretty tough,” she said. “There are trees around, so you have to be straight or else you’ll be in trouble.”

Wall said he wasn’t thrilled about how he played in the first two this summer.

“My first two of the series were terrible. It feels good to shoot in the 70s, for once,” said Wall, noting that he is entered in the championship division of the deCordova Club Championship this weekend.
