Unless they start allowing seventh and eighth graders to compete at the high school level, Kate Bramlett’s record cannot be broken.

Bramlett won her fourth District 7-4A tennis championship in four years of varsity play Tuesday when she and partner Elizabeth Morton captured the girls doubles title at Aledo High.

It’s the second straight season in which Bramlett and Morton have teamed to take the title.

In 2012 Bramlett won the girls singles championship, and in 2011 she and her brother James claimed the mixed doubles championship.

Bramlett and Morton will compete in the Class 4A Region I Tournament in Abilene Monday and Tuesday. A top-two finish there will take them to Austin for a second straight year.

Last season the duo became the first GHS tennis participants at state in five decades.

Bramlett and Morton will be joined by five other Granbury players at regionals.

Alex Jenny and Keelyn Taylor finished second to Bramlett and Morton, losing 6-0, 6-3 in the finals and then winning a playback over Aledo’s Katherine Maade and Lindsey Bradford, 6-4, 6-2.

In boys singles, Joel Rodgers reached the finals before falling to Arlington Heights’ Zan Rive, 6-2, 6-1. Rive reached the state tournament last season.

In boys doubles, the duo of Peter Mueller and Beau Pritchard placed second, dropping a 6-4, 6-1 final to 2013 state qualifiers Ryan Howell and Erik Meendsen of Aledo.

“All of our second-place finishers were beaten by state qualifiers, so that’s pretty impressive,” said Granbury coach Denise Scott.

Bramlett and Morton received a bye in the opening round before winning 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals. Likewise, Jenny and Taylor breezed through their first two matches, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1.

Bramlett and Morton have dropped one match since competing at state last season. They fell at Crowley in a match before district in which Bramlett had a slight shoulder injury.

The majority of those attending regionals are seniors. Jenny and Taylor are juniors, and Pritchard is a freshman seeing his first varsity action after missing the fall with an injury.

Granbury came close to qualifying more players for regionals. The mixed doubles duo of senior Jordan Watson and junior Trace Chiappe finished third, as did junior Deanna Rupp in girls singles.

“It was sad for our seniors who didn’t make it. We had a great group of seniors this year,” said Scott. “But we’re taking a great group to regionals.”
