GHS soccer lands 18 on all-district

Granbury Lady Pirate senior Kelci Slaughter wrapped up her GHS soccer career by going 4-for-4 in all-district honors.

Slaughter recently led nine Lady Pirates named to the All-District 15-4A Soccer Team. She was chosen as the Co-Offensive Most Valuable Player.

The past two seasons Slaughter was a first-team selection. As a freshman she was the Defensive Newcomer of the Year.

Nine Pirates were also honored on the boys team. Leading the accolades were junior Jacob Rose as the Co-Defensive MVP and freshman Bryce Gentry as the Offensive Newcomer of the Year.

The Pirates placed fourth in district and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, finishing with an 8-7-7 record. In bidistrict they upset District 16-4A championship Mansfield Lake Ridge 2-0 before falling 5-2 to Fort Worth North Side in the area round.

The Lady Pirates narrowly missed reaching the postseason, finishing 9-10-1. They were eliminated in the season’s final game at Cleburne.

Lady Pirates selected for the first team are seniors Courtney Heathington and Hannah Hiler. Senior Maggie McKenna and junior Lydia Rife received second-team honors.

Honorable mentions for the GHS girls are seniors Lily Middleton and Jayci Welch, junior Krysta Caudle, and sophomore Marissa Baird.

“I’m proud of them and they are well-deserved,” said Lady Pirate coach David Winkleman.

“The fact that Kelci got a superlative shows how close everything was in our district and how much of a threat she was on the field.

“Hannah was a beast in the midfield and Courtney was a hard-working threat up top.”

Gentry led the Pirates in scoring with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. Rose anchored a defense that held 16 opponents to one or fewer goals and posted four shutouts.

First-team selections for the Pirates are senior Shaun Gomez and freshman Fernando Aguado. Junior Jacob Dyson and sophomore Freddy Espinoza were chosen for the second team.

Senior Christian Carnes, sophomore Hunter McKenna and junior Kaleb Wilson received honorable mentions.

Last year, McKenna andRife were honorable mentions after winning superlative awards as the Offensive and Defensive Newcomers of the Year, respectively, in 2012.

Hiler was on the mention list last season and on the second team previously. Heathington was a second-team selection in 2013 and honorable mention in 2012, and Middleton has twice before been honorable mention along with second team last year.

Gomez was the Newcomer of the Year in 2012 and second team last season. Espinoza received top newcomer accolades in 2013, Carnes was honorable mention the past two years, and McKenna was on the team last year.
