Dozen from GHS advance

April 12, 2014

Led by Sarah Sledge’s gold medal performance in the high jump, the Granbury track team qualified 12 for area from the District 7-4A Meet Wednesday and Thursday in Aledo.

Nine Lady Pirates and three Pirates will compete in the 7/8-4A Area Meet Wednesday and Thursday at Clark Stadium in Fort Worth. It will feature the top four finishers in each event from District 7-4A and 8-4A.

From there, the top four in each event will move on to the Region I Meet in Abilene April 25-26.

Sledge cleared 5 feet to edge runner-up and teammate Jettin Murphy at 4-10.

The highest finish for the Granbury boys was Eugene Geis in the pole vault. He cleared 13 feet for second place.

Qualifying in two events were Caroline Forrest and Emma Thomas. Forrest was fourth in the triple jump and ran a leg of the fourth-place 800 relay. Thomas was third in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200.

“Very proud of these young ladies,” said Ganbury coach Amber Ward. “Our district is very fast and they didn’t let that distract them from their goals. We had more than twice as many qualifiers as last year, so I’m very excited for them.”
