Burleson brings end to Lady Pirates’ season

April 30, 2014

Burleson scored five runs in the first three innings and had a dozen hits in all Friday in an 8-2 bidistrict softball victory over Granbury, eliminating the Lady Pirates from the Class 4A playoffs.

The win clinched the best-of-three series for the visiting Lady Elk (20-7), who advanced to the area playoff round. District 7-4A runner-up Granbury (17-9) had lost the series opener Thursday in Burleson, 9-0.

With Granbury down by four runs, Maci Samuelson took advantage of a stiff wind in the bottom of the fourth and smacked a home run over the left-field fence to cut the deficit to 5-1.

After Burleson built its lead to 7-1 by the top of the sixth, Kristen Money’s RBI single plated Whitley Tipton, who had tripled.

Burleson pitcher Hannah Laudermilk struck out four in the first two innings and six in all. She walked only one and allowed seven hits.

“I told the girls I was proud how they kept fighting for seven innings,” Granbury coach Mallory Smith said. “They kept trying to hit the ball and defend their field the best they could.”

GHS pitcher Destini Lopez gave up 10 hits, as the Lady Elk 22 totaled hits in the two games. Burleson’s Brooke Byrd went 6-for-8 with four RBIs, including two home runs Friday.

“I was really proud of us,” said Samuelson, a senior who reached base all four times she batted Friday. “I’m proud how we executed and fought back.”

She added that it was sad she’ll be leaving because of graduation, but said the emotion hadn’t hit yet.

“I’m not there yet, but I’m sure I will be,” she said.

Edes, who along with Rayla Helcl are the only other GHS seniors, said, “It’s very emotional. It kills me. They’re my sisters. I would do anything for each and every one of them.”
