The Lipan Indians’ hopes of a second consecutive baseball playoff appearance took a hit Friday with a 4-3 home loss to Baird.
The loss dropped the Indians to 7-5 in District 10-A, a game behind Baird. However, since Baird swept Lipan in league play, the Indians need wins in their final two games and losses by Baird in its final two contests to reach the postseason.
Lipan was playing at Gordon, sixth in the eight-team district, last night. The Indians host league-leading Albany Saturday or Monday.
The Albany game was originally to be played Friday, but is being moved due to regional track also being this weekend.
Baird was playing fifth-place Ranger yesterday and has second-place Santo Friday.
The Indians fell behind 4-0 before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the seventh Friday. They outhit Baird 5-4, but also committed four errors to none for Baird.
“The games was a well-pitched game by both pitchers,” said Lipan coach Mike Permenter.
“We faced (Garret) Deel for two games, which was 57 batters. He walked zero.”
Lipan’s own pitcher, Lance Ferguson, gave a yeoman performance. He walked just two and struck out two.
Ferguson also led Lipan at the plate, going 3-for-3.
“We did not hit the ball hard until late in the game. Early, we were getting jammed at the plate, hitting it off the handle, and Baird was making plays,” said Permenter.
“I am proud of the comeback the team made in the seventh, just fell short.”
