Pirates connect on two long bombs in scrimmage

August 15, 2014

The Granbury Pirates, members of District 8-5A, connected on two long touchdown passes as they took on Class 4A Wichita Falls Hirschi Friday night on Johnny Perkins Field at Pirate Stadium in their first 2014 scrimmage. GHS receiver Nick Doughty hauled in TD passes of 70 and 40 yards from quarterback Brodie Ables, who alternated at that position with Dillon Graham and will be competing for the starting job. The Pirates also had a “virtual” score turned in by the defense as Davis McDuff intercepted a Hirschi pass and had clear sailing to return it for a score, but the coaches called the play dead because of the scrimmage format. The Huskies scored only one TD, on a 70-yard pass of their own on their first series of downs. The Pirates, who were 9-2 last season in Class 4A, will take on Stephenville in their final scrimmage, at 7 p.m. Friday, again at Pirate Stadium. GHS will open the season on Aug. 29 at Azle, with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
