Avenging last season’s playoff loss and decades of frustration against Crawford, the Rattlers defeated the visiting Pirates 34-20 Friday.

It was the first win against the Pirates since 1986 for the Rattlers — and Tolar’s first victory as a 3A school.

Tolar head coach Mike Franklin said it was a great win over an opponent that was ranked in the 2A Top 10 and favored to win.

“I told our young men tonight ‘let’s make a statement,'” said Franklin. “I think we came out and did that.”

Frankin said the key to victory was “team.”

Coming up big for Tolar was senior running back Cody Jones who ran for three touchdowns and threw for another. Jones rushed 18 times for 210 yards, including a 98-yard run to help break the game open early in the fourth quarter for Tolar after the defense stuffed Crawford at the goal line.

By halftime, Tolar was up 20-7 after falling behind 7-0 early in the first quarter after a 69-yard run by the Pirates (0-1).

Dustin Lundy contributed with a 21-yard TD run and Griffin King scored the final touchdown of the game on a fourth down pass reception that sealed the deal for the Rattlers (1-0).

Senior quarterback Colby Trinkle was 5-9 passing for 36 yards and one interception for the Rattlers.

Tolar plays Hico at home next week.
