Pirates outscored by Stephenville in final scrimmage

August 22, 2014

The Granbury Pirates scored first against highly ranked Stephenville Friday night in the final football scrimmage before the start of the regular season at Johnny Perkins Field at Pirate Stadium in Granbury. That came on a 70-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brody Ables to Brenden King. The Yellow Jackets, one of the favorites to contend for the Class 4A Division I state championship, responded with three TD passes. They included a pair of 17-yard scoring plays thrown by Texas Tech recruit Jarrett Stidham, plus a 65-yard aerial by the Yellow Jackets. The evening featured a controlled scrimmage followed by one 12-minute quarter, followed by another 6-minute clock segment. Neither team scored a TD that stood up in the timed segments, although a 2-yard run to the end zone by Stidham was negated by a penalty. Granbury, a member of District 8-5A, will open the season Aug. 29 at Azle’s Hornet Field (7:30 p.m.).
