The representative from Open Carry Texas-Hood County who had scheduled a May 17 noon rally in downtown Granbury has canceled the event.
“I had a negative reaction from shop owners on the square,” said Randy Shelton, a Hood County man who is county coordinator for Hood, Somervell, Bosque and Hamilton counties for Open Carry Texas (OCT).
“With that in mind, I came to realize that the way this was put together was all wrong, and I decided we need to shift to legislative and educational opportunities.”
Texas law allows for concealed handguns for those with a valid state-issued license. However, Texas is one of only six states that has a law banning the “open carry” of handguns in public areas.
Shelton contends that open carry laws actually can reduce crime rates.
