Phyllis Ann (Wangler) Mullally passed away on July 31st, 2018 at Glen Rose Medical Center, Glen Rose, TX. She was born to Caroline (Pfeiffer) and Jacob Wangler of Aberdeen, South Dakota on August 21, 1936. She married Michael Joseph Mullally in 1954. Mike and Phyllis had five children between 1955 and 1962: Susan, Michael, Jane, Steven and Kevin. They moved from Aberdeen to Manhattan KS in 1966 when her husband was appointed to the Postal Inspection Service; during his 21-year career, Phyllis received an Outstanding Wife Award.
An advocate of education, she read to her children daily with zeal and instilled in each child a strong work ethic and Catholic values. Hers is a legacy of a loving mother who taught her children to become respectful and accountable. This enabled them to become achievers and difference makers; all five received college degrees from the University of Missouri.
While the children were young, Phyllis worked part-time for the Internal Revenue Service and the Kansas Farm Bureau. In 1971, the family moved to Kansas City, MO. With the children in high school and college, Phyllis found her career niche as the executive secretary to the general manager of the retail division of Hallmark’s Halls Crown Center.
Mike and Phyllis have been residents at Pecan Plantation since 1987 and are congregants of Francis Cabrini Catholic Church. Phyllis served as a Eucharist minister, assisted with Bingo fundraisers and the Funeral ministry. Additionally, she volunteered at Hood County Meals on Wheels, at her husband’s side.
An avid and competitive golfer, she loved her friends in the Ladies Golf Association. She held a number of positions in the LGA, including the presidency in 1995. Phyllis made a hole in one on number five at Pecan Plantation in 1984, while playing with her husband and three sons.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her mother on December 12, 1984, and by her father, on December 10, 1991. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Merlyn (Susan Mullally) Knapp of Celina, Tx, Mrs. Michael (Jane Mullally) Higdon of Bluffton, SC, and three sons, Michael J. Jr. of Houston, Steven J. of Kansas City and Kevin P. of Kansas City, six grandchildren, one great grandchild and two sisters, Mrs. William (Mary Lou) Jones of Minneapolis MN and Mrs. John (Alice) May of Aberdeen SD.
