Members of American Legion Post 491 took part in the solemn Dignified Disposal of Unserviceable Flags Ceremony at the post on Davis Road Saturday morning. It’s a time-honored tradition for the post to offer the service every year on Flag Day. In the wake of last year’s May 15 tornado the post was badly damaged, and the ceremony could not be conducted. It took post historian Tom Grove (above) and a small army of American Legion members to dispose close to 1,000 flags. For the first time the post will conduct another ceremony in October to properly dispose of the remaining flags, including any turned in between now and the ceremony.
