‘Forging new territories’: The New Granbury Live changing things up

The New Granbury Live stages today the premiere of its musical variety comedy, “Follies!”

The theater on the east side of the square has made some changes to the facility and the style of music, according to general manager Sam Houston.

Artists will interact more with the audience in this show, and they will all be featured, rather than one artist in particular, he explained.

There will be prizes given to the audience during the show, and the atmosphere is intended to feel like “sitting around a campfire,” Houston said.

They have renovated the facility, bringing new sound systems and lighting.

“I think people will see a real difference in the quality of production,” Houston said.

But a changed atmosphere isn’t all this production will bring to town.

“We’ve got some really talented vocalists to sing and some extraordinarily talented musicians,” Houston said.

Rocky Gribble will be the lead guitarist, Houston said.

“He was sort of the resident musical star at the Grapevine Opry for many years. He’s kind of a legend in the Metroplex.”

The Academy of Western Artists young artist of the year award winner Leddy Bragg will be in the show, and Mark Gheen will be on the piano.

“He has played with lots of people, including Ray Price,” Houston said. “So these are some super-duper performers.”

Some local favorites will also be in the show, including Zac Wilson, and Alecia and Mike Echols, and more.

Classic songs of Texas country music will be featured, such as music by Patsy Cline, Bob Wills, George Strait, Willie Nelson and many others.

However, the show will diverge in some ways from traditional music.

“We’re doing some kind of interesting musical arrangements,” Houston said.

A guys’ duet will be featured, and some songs traditionally sung by men will, instead, be sung my women, according to Houston.

“We’re kinda forging new territories,” he said.

The show will run on Saturday, July 15 and Saturday, July 29 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“People will leave with a smile on their face and tapping their toe. I believe they’ll do that,” he said. “You’ll feel good when you leave.”
