Realignment puts Tolar with tough foes

Tolar’s new football and basketball districts include teams that have had remarkable success over the years.

Tolar’s football district (4-3A Division II) features Cisco, Eastland, Bangs, Coleman and Dublin.

Cisco will enter the 2016 footbal season with a streak of 30 straight district wins under head coach Brent West. The squad has compiled a 62-6 record from 2011 through 2015.

Santo comeback downs Lady Rattlers

The Tolar Lady Rattlers were set for their second upset of the Santo Lady Bulldogs this season through the first half of Friday’s basketball game in Santo.

The game was tied at 23.

In the second half, however, the game slipped away from the Lady Rattlers as they fell 59-47.

“They came out to play in the third quarter,” said Tolar coach Jaci Johnson of Santo (22-4, 6-3 in District 10-2A).

Rattlers retain tie for first place

The Tolar Rattlers maintained a share of the top spot in District 10-2A basketball Tuesday with a 65-38 victory against visiting Ranger.

The Rattlers (10-13 overall) are 6-1 in district and are tied with Goldthwaite for first. Their only league loss was 41-39 at Goldthwaite last week, and the teams will play again in Tolar on Feb.

Lady Rattlers’ hopes for playoffs take hit

The Tolar Lady Rattlers’ playoff chances took a hit Tuesday with a 55-31 home loss to Hico.

The loss dropped the Lady Rattlers (10-17 overall) to 2-7 in District 10-2A. They likely have to win out to have a chance at the postseason.

The Lady Rattlers were without one of their top players, guard Marlee Thomas.

The good news is no one is ahead of the Tolar Rattlers in the District 10-2A boys basketball standings.

The bad news is the Rattlers surrendered sole possession of first place and are now tied with Goldthwaite for the top spot in district, each with 5-1 records. Also, Goldthwaite owns the tiebreaker – at least until the teams meet again in Tolar on Feb.

Upset slips away from Tolar girls

The Tolar Lady Rattlers were in prime position for an upset Friday night, a win that would have enhanced their postseason chances.

However, a fourth-quarter rally by Goldthwaite altered those chances as the Lady Eagles rallied for a 50-44 victory.

Tolar led 37-32 as the final quarter began. Goldthwaite ended on an 18-7 run that included an 11-for-14 performance at the free throw line.

Rattlers work extra to stay atop 10-2A

The Tolar Rattlers won their biggest game of the season Tuesday night, setting up what is now their biggest game of the season.

The 54-49 overtime victory against De Leon at home left the Rattlers in sole possession of first place in District 10-2A with a 5-0 record. Last night they were playing at second-place Goldthwaite, which came in with a 4-1 mark.

If the Tolar Lady Rattlers are going to climb back into the District 10-2A playoff race, they took a big first step Tuesday night.

And they got some help.

The Lady Rattlers’ 41-31 win over De Leon improved them to 2-5 in district. Meanwhile, losses by Santo and Hamilton left those teams with 4-3 records and tied for third place.

But how they can make a difference in a basketball game.

The Tolar Lady Rattlers made just 10 of 26 free throws Friday. Visiting Hamilton was 18-for-25.

The final score was Hamilton 50, Tolar 46.

Rattlers win big, now 4-0

TOLAR — No one has gotten close to the Tolar Rattlers in District 10-2A competition.

Literally.

The Rattlers ran past visiting Hamilton Friday, 63-43. It was their fourth straight win to open league play, and their closest game yet in district.

“Winning this game helps us out a lot,” said Tolar coach Kent Caruthers.
