Windthorst’s hot start sinks Rattlers in bidistrict, 77-62

BROCK – A lightning-fast start bolted the Windthorst Trojans to a 77-62 win over the Tolar Rattlers in the first round of the Class 2A boys basketball playoffs in a rare Wednesday night game.

The Trojans’ first three baskets were 3-pointers, forcing the Rattlers to fight from behind in the bidistrict tilt moved back a day because of icy weather.

Tolar girls fall in area playoff

SPRINGTOWN – The turnaround was impressive.

Injuries hit the Tolar girls basketball team early in the season, resulting in a 0-6 start.

The Lady Rattlers recovered and reeled off wins, capturing the 10-2A district championship for the first time since 2010.

“We can’t be completely disappointed,” Tolar coach Benita Carlton said after a 70-56 season-ending loss to Alvord in the area playoff Friday night.

Tolar boys playoff changed to Tuesday

As of press time, the Tolar boys basketball team’s bidistrict playoff game was moved from Monday to last night because of the icy road conditions, so the results of that game will be in Saturday’s paper.

Coach Kent Caruthers’ Rattlers (12-15) were tentatively scheduled to play Windthorst last night at Brock High School.

Rattlers, Eagles in showdown

The playoff-bound Tolar Rattlers still have a shot at the District 10-2A basketball title.

Coach Kent Caruthers’ 12-14 Rattlers sailed past De Leon at home Friday night, 55-38, setting up a showdown with the district-leading Goldthwaite Eagles. That game was played last night in Goldthwaite.

“Our intensity level wasn’t as high as I wanted it to be,” Caruthers said.

Lady Rattlers lose, 48-43

The Tolar Lady Rattlers lost to Cross Plains, 48-43, Friday night at home in a practice game in preparation for the postseason.

Coach Benita Carlton’s Lady Rattlers (18-10 on the season) earned the District 10-2A championship with an 11-1 mark. They have a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Cross Plains (23-5) ranked 17th in the state in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class A poll.

Playoff-bound Lady Rattlers win again

The Tolar Lady Rattlers, with the District 10-2A girls basketball crown already in hand, rolled over Hamilton 52-36 at home Tuesday night to close out the regular season.

Tolar’s girls had clinched the title last Friday with their 77-60 win over Ranger.

The Lady Rattlers (11-1 in District 10-2A, 18-9 overall) will play their area playoff game against either Alvord, Itasca or Dallas Gateway.

A 3-point basket at the closing buzzer gave Tolar home fans a thrill Tuesday night as the Rattlers clinched a playoff berth with a 59-56 triumph over Hamilton in Rattler Gym.

Bryce Farmer hit the winning shot, boosting him game-high point total to 12 as the 11-14 Rattlers improved to 8-2 in league play with the win over the rival Bulldogs (8-3).

The Tolar Lady Rattlers captured the District 10-2A basketball championship Friday night with a 77-60 victory over Ranger.

It was the first district basketball title for the Lady Rattlers in five years, according to head coach Benita Carlton.

Hannah Peregrino led the Tolar girls with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Three other Lady Rattlers scored in double figures – Liz Bonnell with 12, and Marlee Thomas and Meredith Caudle with 10 each.

The Tolar boys need one more victory to clinch a basketball playoff berth after Friday’s 85-26 win over Ranger.

Yovani Guevara was red-hot from outside for the Rattlers (7-2 in District 10-2A, 10-14 overall), hitting 6 of his 10 3-point attempts.

He finished with 18 points, while Cody Jones had 10 and Tristen Phillips added 10.

TSWA honors 5 Rattlers

Tolar running back Blayne Denton, a 2,000-yard rusher in 2014, was voted third-team all-state by the Texas Sports Writers Association.

The Class 2A honor team, finally released this week, also included four Rattlers on the honorable mention list. They are defensive back Blake Watson, center Clay Foster, linebacker Hunter Ryan and quarterback Dakota Endsley.
