Tolar dominates Dublin in scrimmage

With Tolar’s players donning different jersey numbers than will be worn during the regular season, it was often difficult to distinguish the players on the field during Thursday night’s football scrimmage against Dublin at Rattler Stadium.

Determining the superior team was not.

The scrimmage consisted of a junior varsity-varsity controlled simulation, a single live quarter for the JV and a full half for the varsity.

“We’re definitely bigger,” Rattlers head coach Mike Franklin said of his squad, coming off a 9-3 season. “The kids have grown. Some of our seniors put on more weight, put on more muscle. We’re just bigger everywhere.”

Tolar outscores Lions in scrimmage

Tolar outscored Dublin 2-0 Thursday night at Rattler Stadium in a controlled football scrimmage, and the Rattlers also outscored the Lions 26-6 when they played two timed quarters.

The Rattlers recorded three touchdowns on the ground, on runs of 44, 5 and 4 yards. Tolar also added a 1-yard TD pass thrown by quarterback Dakota Endsley.

Stephens Scholarship Run registration continues

Registration has begun for the second Sgt. Riley G. Stephens Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K and Fun Run Saturday, Sept. 27 in Tolar.

In addition to the 5K and Fun Run, $1 tickets can be purchased for a drawing for a quilt, handmade by Lucy Esposito.

Tolar opens with pair of volleyball wins

Tolar’s volleyball squad opened its 2014 season strong, with a pair of victories.

The Lady Rattlers downed De Leon on Aug. 12, 25-15, 29-27, 25-15, in a match played on the road.

Then, on Friday, Tolar was a 25-19, 16-25, 25-14, 25-9 winner on their home court,over Venus.

“(We’re) off to a good start,” Lady Rattlers coach Scotty Miller said, noting that they were playing Hico Tuesday before competing in the Glen Rose tournament.

Tolar went into its first football scrimmage Friday hoping to focus on the basics – plain vanilla offense and defense.

Class 3A Brock evidently chose to go ahead and add chocolate, whipped cream and cherries on top. Tolar outscored the host school, Santo, 2-0, but the Eagles pulled out the stops to post a 2-0 edge over the Rattlers.

Funds from scrimmages at GHS, Tolar to aid fund

All proceeds from Tolar’s Thursday’s football scrimmage, and Granbury’s scrimmage versus Stephenville on Friday will be donated to the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation’s Benevolence Fund.

The Pirates will be at home with a 7 p.m. start against former district rival Stephenville. The Rattlers will be at home Thursday against Dublin with a 6:30 p.m.

Teams hit field as football begins

Two-a-days may be fading away for many high school football teams, but that first-day enthusiasm will never die.

The county’s two 11-man football schools staged their first practice of the 2014 season, sticking to a morning schedule. Current University Interscholastic League rules such as restricting two-a-days to every other day have made coaches re-think their approach to what works best for them.

Tolar assistant coach Lance LeStever has some fun with some of the Rattlers during a fumble drill Monday as the first day of preseason football practice began with 61 players on hand. A total of 61 high school players showed up for the first day, and more may arrive later in the week, according to Rattlers head coach Mike Franklin.
