Club volleyball coming to Tolar

TOLAR – Tommy Matthews has visions of volleyball dancing in his head – and they’re about to become reality.

He’s teaming with Katie Covell, a senior volleyball player at Tarleton State University, to develop a club team in Tolar. Covell is the director and coach.

The groundbreaking for the future business – to be known as the Urban Volleyball Club – was held Wednesday.

Rattlers stay in title hunt

TOLAR – The Tolar Rattlers notched their sixth win in eight outings this season Friday at Rattler Stadium, drilling the Eagles of Goldthwaite 39-26 in a key District 7-2A, Div. 1 football contest.

The Rattlers were dominant, rushing for 365 yards – a yard more than Goldthwaite’s total offensive output of 364 yards.

Lady Rattlers have shot at district title

The final two district volleyball games for the playoff-bound and 16th-ranked Tolar volleyball team still could prove to be crucial for the Lady Rattlers, who are tied for first place with Bryson.

Tuesday’s 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18 victory over Ranger clinched the first playoff spot for the Lady Rattlers since 2009.

HICO – With their extra point kicker sidelined earlier with an injury, the Tolar Rattlers tried and failed on a pair of two-point conversion attempts and Hico held on for a 20-19 football victory.

The District 7-2A, Div. I loss at Tiger Stadium ended Tolar’s five-game winning streak as the Rattlers slipped to 1-1 in district and 5-2 overall.

Anyone who kept up with Tolar football the last three seasons knew how effective running back Cory Solomon was for the Rattlers.

In a dozen games his junior year, Solomon rushed for 1,723 yards – believed to be the school record during Tolar’s 11-man football era, according to Rattlers head coach Mike Franklin.

Lady Rattlers maintain lead

The Tolar volleyball squad – now state-ranked – held on to its lead in District 9-2A with a 25-12, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13 victory over Poolville Tuesday at home.

“We didn’t play great, but played well enough,” said Tolar coach Scotty Miller, whose team improved to 10-1 in district play. “Madeline Dawson had a great match.”

Miller said that Dawson likely had more than 10 kills in the match.

Rattlers win in a flash

HAMILTON – Lightning ended Friday’s football contest between Tolar and Hamilton early. Unfortunately for Hamilton, it wasn’t early enough.

The Rattlers routed the Bulldogs 48-0 in the District 7-2A, Div. I opener for both teams, which was shortened to just one half because of the lightning that was part of a storm that rolled through the area including Kooken Field.

Lady Rattlers leap into first

The Tolar Lady Rattlers are playing a strong brand of volleyball, putting them in the lead of the District 7-2A standings as well as in the state rankings.

Coach Scotty Miller said that Friday’s 25-19, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22 triumph over the district’s other top contender, Bryson, was huge. It vaulted the Lady Rattlers (9-1 in district) past Bryson (8-1) into first place – at least for now.

Tolar girls starting strong

The Tolar volleyball squad is off to a strong start in District 9-2A this season with a 5-1 mark after beating Chico and Ranger.

Last Saturday, Coach Scotty Miller’s Lady Rattlers downed Chico in straight sets, 25-13, 25-10, 25-16.

Rattlers throttle Rio Vista for fourth win in a row

The naming of the 2014 Tolar Homecoming queen proved to be the only suspense on Friday night at Rattler Stadium.

Tolar cruised to a 42-7 victory, dominating the Eagles of Rio Vista in Tolar’s final nondistrict football contest of the season.

Tolar’s defense held Rio Vista to 185 yards of total offense, including negative four yards in the third quarter.
