Lady Rattlers clinch spot in postseason

Staci Ashley struck out 15 batters Tuesday as the Tolar Lady Rattlers defeated Ranger 6-2 in a District 11-2A softball game Tuesday night.

The victory clinched a playoff berth for the Lady Rattlers (15-9), who improved to 11-0 in district. They were hosting Bryson last night and a victory would clinch the district championship.

The Tolar Rattlers finished about where coach Kent Caruthers figured they would in the Class 2A Region II Golf Tournament.

And that makes Caruthers pretty darned proud.

“There were some pretty decent golfers there, and we shot about what we have all year,” he said.

“For every one of these guys, it’s their first trip to regionals in golf.

Tolar teams double up on track titles

It took a little longer than expected, but the Tolar Rattlers and Lady Rattlers captured their respective championships in the District 10-2A Track Meet at Rattler Stadium Thursday.

Competition was halted twice by lightning and hale, each time for about a half an hour. When action did finally finish, however, the Rattlers scored 244 points to easily outdistance runner-up Hico with 133, and the Lady Rattlers edged Hamilton 162.5-147.

Hoopsters academic all-state

From Duke University to Granbury Middle School, coaches love smart athletes.

And there’s more than a few of them in the immediate area, as indicated by the academic all-state basketball awards handed out by a variety of organizations recently.

Thirteen local basketball players and a manager were honored.

Granbury had nine honors – four Lady Pirates, four Pirates and girls basketball team manager Julie Belfrey.

Rattlers rout Gordon by 34 runs

The hits and runs just keep on coming for the Tolar Rattlers baseball team.

Tuesday night the Rattlers scored a season-high in walloping Gordon 34-0 in a District 13-2A contest in Gordon.

The Rattlers (10-1-1, 6-0 in district) have yet to be tested in league play. They’ve outscored their opponents 135-2.

Lady Rattlers’ win streak at 11

The Tolar Lady Rattlers moved closer to their first softball playoff berth since 2010 and continued their dominance of District 11-2A Tuesday with a pair of lopsided wins over Gordon.

The Lady Rattlers won the opener 8-1 and followed with an 18-0 thumping in the nightcap, improving to 13-9 overall and 9-0 in district.

Tolar track wins again

If the Tolar track season were to be put to music, it would start to sound like a broken record.

But it is certainly beautiful music to the Rattlers and their faithful.

For the third time in as many meets, the Tolar boys won a track meet. This time they came home with the championship of the Keene Relays, scoring 143 points to edge runner-up Godley with 123.

Tolar pole vaulter Rodie Brister cleared 15 feet, 1 inch at the Texas Relays this past weekend to finish seventh in his division. It came on the heels of having cleared another personal-best of 14-7 earlier in the competition.

Any time a game sparks the debate of being the biggest victory in school history, it was indeed one very important game.

The Tolar Rattlers’ game at home against Bosqueville Friday was such a game.

It wasn’t a district game, but it was certainly a way to measure just how good this Rattlers team might be this season.

Tolar SB remains perfect in district

The Tolar Lady Rattlers improved to 4-0 in District 11-2A with a 6-2 home victory against Perrin-Whitt Friday.

Staci Ashley pitched a three-hitter, while Hannah Lee and Kailee Brock each had three hits. Ashley struck out 12, giving her 71 in 52.1 innings pitched this season.

Lee had a double and triple among her hits, while Brock had a double and drove in four runs.
