Husband-wife team new NCTA coaches

Two new coaches have joined the staff at North Central Texas Academy.

Chief Operating Officer Chuck Shipman announced the hiring of Jordan and James Southerland, a husband-and-wife team who have been at DeSoto Canterbury the past two years.

“They are going to be great additions to our program,” said Shipman. “They have family in the area also.

Fourth in TAPPS golf

The North Central Texas Academy Pioneers finished fourth in the recent Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class A State Golf Tournament at Cottonwood Golf Course in Waco. The Pioneers shot 871 (435-436) over two rounds. Lubbock All Saints won with an 803 (404-399), followed by Waxahachie Prep Academy at 812 and Lubbock Southwest Christian School 836.

NCTA sending 18 to TAPPS in Waco

With 18 athletes advancing to Waco this weekend, the North Central Texas Academy boys and girls track teams have visions of adding to their state championship trophy collection.

NCTA (formerly Happy Hill) boys qualified 10 from the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class A North Region Meet in Bastrop late last week, while the girls are sending eight to state.

Marko Vulovic of North Central Texas Academy finished second in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class A State Tennis Tournament in Waco recently. Also from NCTA, the boys doubles team of Marc Langston and Webster Hu reached the second round. Also qualifying for state were Jared Dodson in boys singles, DeMario McGowan and Stanley Kuo in boys doubles, Kelsey Kacal in girls singles, and the girls doubles teams of Margart Campbell and Emily Wilbouorne, along with Cinthya Rivas and Sidney Lindsey.

Gabriela Bianchi was in Brazil when her sister Carolina won a state championship with the North Central Texas Academy Lady Pioneers in 2014.

But, given the way the team compiles state titles, she had good reason to believe if she came to the school this year she’d get one of her own.

Moments after the North Central Academy Pioneers defeated Kingwood Northeast Christian 67-65 for the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class A state championship, KNC coach Christopher Schoettelkotte had something to say to NCTA coach Kirby Rasco.

“Let’s do it again next year,” he said.

Of course, Schoettelkotte would love a different outcome, but he still acknowledged participating in what he said was the greatest game he’s seen.

Because, in the words of North Central Texas Academy coach Kirby Rasco, “You just never know.”

Rasco said those words between excitement and exhaustion following his Pioneers’ 67-65 overtime victory against Kingwood Northeast Christian Saturday at Mansfield Timberview High School.

Lady Pioneers run to fifth straight

ARLINGTON – Unlike the weather in Texas, some things can simply be counted on to never change.

This includes the crowning of the North Central Texas Academy Lady Pioneers as Class A champions of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

Certainly, that has been the case this entire decade as the Lady Pioneers defeated Brownsville First Baptist 57-34 at Mansfield Timberview High School Saturday for a fifth consecutive state championship.
