North Central Texas Academy’s six-man football fortunes may turn out to be strong again in 2014, but not everything is in place yet for the Pioneers.

Jared Dodson, valuable on offense and defense, is expected back at quarterback – where he earned honorable mention all-state honors – as well as being a valuable asset at safety but is still recovering from a knee injury.

Crusaders ready to challenge again

Last season was a breakout campaign for the Cornerstone Christian Academy Crusaders, as they earned the first district championship in the school’s history.

The Crusaders of coach Bobby Johnson were eliminated in the opening round of the Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship six-man playoffs, finishing with a 9-2 record. But it was only the third season of varsity football for the Crusaders, who were 6-6 in 2012 and 8-4 in 2011.

No one can say that the North Texas Central Texas Pioneers didn’t pack the most six-man action they could into their opening football scrimmage Friday.

Coach Kirby Rasco’s Pioneers took on Dallas Tyler Street Christian, Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills and Fort Worth Hill School in private-school six-man action at the NCTA field.

A handful of area athletes recently signed letters-of-intent to play their respective sport in college.

Granbury pitcher Nathan Hickey, who set a school record with a 0.32 earned run average, has signed with Paris Junior College. Hickey is also only the third pitcher in GHS history to strike out 100 batters in a season.
