CARPENTER A HANSEN SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF WEEK

Former Granbury Lady Pirate volleyball player Sydney Carpenter was recently named a Scholar Athlete of the Week by Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen.

Carpenter was an academic all-state selection in volleyball. She was a key player in the Lady Pirates enjoying their best volleyball season.

Can you spare a glove or bat for a kid?

Fall Baseball registration is under way for our local Granbury Athletic Association (GAA).

The Granbury Parks and Recreation Department is teaming with the GAA for the next few months and doing something new. We will be holding a Glove Drive. This will feature the donation of ANY usable sporting equipment from citizens, whether it’s something lying around or brand spankin’ new.

Tolar enjoys 7-on-7 success

As the Tolar Rattlers prepare for what will be a challenging fall football schedule, they are coming off their best summer of 7-on-7 football.

The Rattlers fell a little short of their goal of reaching the 7-on-7 State Tournament, but they were successful in almost every other way.

The Rattlers posted an 18-8 record.

Former Dallas Cowboy to coach Pirates defense

Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Stephen Hodge will be defensive coordinator for the Granbury Pirates this year.

Hodge, a standout player in Tatum and later at Texas Christian University, was drafted by the Cowboys in 2009.

Injuries cut short his NFL career.

Hodge most recently coached in Rusk.

The defensive coordinator will be joined by new football assistants Jody Brown, Anthony Overstreet and Jordon Sweatt.

S.W.A.T softball team chasing 14-Under world title

Talk about coming a long way in a short time.

When the Granbury S.W.A.T girls played their first softball tournament of 2014, the team managed three hits in a pair of losses.

Next week they will be playing in the PONY (Protect Our Nation’s Youth) 14-Under Softball World Series in Lubbock.

Live bait best for predators

Most striper anglers know that live shad is generally the best bait to use to catch stripers and hybrids, especially when the water temperatures get above 60 degrees.

The shad species is the most abundant baitfish species, and is the main forage for all predators in our local lakes.

Right now the Brazos Lakes, namely Possum Kingdom, Granbury and Whitney, are making a grand recovery on striped bass after deadly fish kills from the golden algae blooms in the past years.
