Coaches love smart athletes.
It makes their job easier.
And Hood County schools have certainly had their share of intelligent athletes over the years, proven once again by a variety of coaches associations around the state.

Lipan qualifiers for the Class A Division II Region III Meet in Bullard April 25-26 include Jorge Hernandez, Catherine Thormann, Lanie Roberts, and Shelby Bontke.
Each reached state in 2013.
They will be joined by a host of other Indians and Lady Indians following the recent Area 17/18 Meet.
Roberts won two gold medals, taking first in the 800-meter run with a 2:39, and in the 1600 in six minutes.… Read the rest
The Granbury Pirates remained tied with Arlington Heights atop the District 7-4A baseball standings with a 10-0 whitewashing of Western Hills Friday.
Granbury pitchers Landon Weatherly and Payton Rhodes combined to pitch a two-hitter. Weatherly struck out seven over three and a third innings.
It’s only the second time in 10 district games that the Pirates (15-7, 9-1 in District 7-4A) have not had a pitcher throw a complete game.… Read the rest
Granbury pitcher Nathan Hickey has been close to perfect this baseball season.
Tuesday night in Fort Worth he was.
Hickey pitched a five-inning perfect game in a 16-0 victory at O.D. Wyatt. He struck out 13 Chaparrals in the process.
The game was called early because of the University Interscholastic League mercy rule.
Hickey was nothing short of dominant. Of his 63 pitches, 45 were strikes.… Read the rest
The Tolar Lady Rattlers’ postseason softball hopes came to an end Tuesday night with a 10-0 loss at Grandview.
The Lady Rattlers (6-12 overall) slipped to 2-6 in District 10-2A with two games to play, including last night’s home finale’ against Maypearl.
“Tonight’s game was a must-win, and it just didn’t fall our way,” said Tolar coach Christy Collie.

Pitchers Destini Lopez and Kristen Money combined to pitch a no-hitter, and the Granbury Lady Pirates had little trouble winning 11-0 at Trimble Tech Tuesday.
The victory improved the Lady Pirates (14-5 overall) to 9-2 in District 7-4A softball. More important, it moved them back into a tie with South Hills (17-6, 9-2) for second place in district, two games behind Aledo.… Read the rest
Unless they start allowing seventh and eighth graders to compete at the high school level, Kate Bramlett’s record cannot be broken.
Bramlett won her fourth District 7-4A tennis championship in four years of varsity play Tuesday when she and partner Elizabeth Morton captured the girls doubles title at Aledo High.

Led by Sarah Sledge’s gold medal performance in the high jump, the Granbury track team qualified 12 for area from the District 7-4A Meet Wednesday and Thursday in Aledo.
