Rattlers win final game in tourney

December 13, 2014

The Tolar Rattlers, with their new arrivals from the football team still getting into basketball shape, dropped their first two games in the Dublin basketball tournament, but bounced back to defeat Early in a consolation bracket match last Saturday.

Coach Kent Caruthers’ Rattlers (1-4) defeated Early, 69-68, Saturday. They had lost in the first round Thursday to Coleman, 73-50, then fell to Eastland, 48-45, on Friday.

CCA girls lose, boys win on road

December 13, 2014

The Cornerstone Christian Academy girls basketball team struggled Tuesday night, having several players out with injuries in a 39-21 nondistrict road loss to Arlington St. Paul Academy.

The Lady Crusaders (1-3) had four of their top six players sidelined in the game and had only seven healthy enough to compete in the game, according to coach Richard Lauer.

Lady Rattlers outscored

December 13, 2014

The Tolar Lady Rattlers fell behind in the second quarter and couldn’t get back in the contest on Tuesday night in a 43-30 nondistrict girls basketball loss on the road in Millsap.

The Lady Rattlers (2-7) were outscored 14-5 in the second quarter and trailed 25-13 at intermission.

Tolar suffered through multiple injuries during the early part of the season but are starting to get healthy, according to coach Benita Carlton.

Lipan  girls rally, win tourney

LIPAN – The Lipan basketball girls rallied from a 16-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat Class 3A Keene Saturday, earning the girls crown in the inaugural Texstar Lipan Tournament of Champions.

Lipan’s Lanie Roberts, a junior who scored 86 points – including 38 in a win over Tenaha Thursday – was named Most Valuable Player among the girls.

Van Griffith Kia tourney starting Thursday

The annual Van Griffith Kia Basketball Tournament starts Thursday and continues through Saturday’s championship games.

Pool play begins Thursday morning and bracket play starts Friday afternoon.

The girls division will include Stephenville, ranked No. 6 in the state in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A poll. The other girls teams are Alvord, El Paso Burges, Kennedale and Stephenville in the White Pool, and El Paso Franklin, Godley, Granbury and Waco Robinson in the Purple Pool.

The Granbury boys basketball team is still unbeaten, through seven games, and now has a tournament title to show for it.

Coach David Breazeale’s Pirates plowed through the three-day Applebee’s Classic at Boswell High School, taking down host Boswell on Saturday in the title game, 45-30.
