College athletes should not be paid. Their scholarship worth many thousand dollars is their payment.

Husband-wife team new NCTA coaches

Two new coaches have joined the staff at North Central Texas Academy.

Chief Operating Officer Chuck Shipman announced the hiring of Jordan and James Southerland, a husband-and-wife team who have been at DeSoto Canterbury the past two years.

“They are going to be great additions to our program,” said Shipman. “They have family in the area also.

Alumni Report: Former Rattler making move from player to coach

John Elmore has ended one career at Howard Payne and entered another.

Elmore, a former Tolar Rattler, played his final baseball season for the Yellowjackets this year.

And, after four seasons in a Yellowjacket uniform, he will continue to don one as a graduate assistant coach.

“It is definitely going to be a different situation than what I’m used to being in, but I feel that this is going to be very rewarding to help the players grow,” said Elmore.

Lipan baseball, softball programs looking to next season

With most of both teams returning next season, folks in Lipan are already looking forward to the 2016 baseball and softball seasons.

The Indians (2-8, all District 13-2A games) will return all nine starters. The Lady Indians (3-11, all District 11-2A) will bring back eight starters.

“For the first time in seven years we run-ruled a team, and did it twice this year,” said Mike Permenter, who retired as coach and Lipan High principal at the end of the school year.
