SHRINE CLUB GOLF TOURNAMENT SET

The Lake Granbury Area Shrine Club’s Open Fall Golf Tournament will be Monday, Oct. 13, at the Hidden Oaks Golf Course, 2701 Hideaway Bay Ct.

Ladies are welcome, but it’slimited to 100 players.

It will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Check-in is set to begin at 7:30 a.m.

Lady Rattlers leap into first

The Tolar Lady Rattlers are playing a strong brand of volleyball, putting them in the lead of the District 7-2A standings as well as in the state rankings.

Coach Scotty Miller said that Friday’s 25-19, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22 triumph over the district’s other top contender, Bryson, was huge. It vaulted the Lady Rattlers (9-1 in district) past Bryson (8-1) into first place – at least for now.

Winning gold medals in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games is getting to be a habit for Hood County resident Roger Hanks.

During his seven years of competing in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG), Hanks has earned 18 gold medals (first place), four silver (runner-up) and three bronze (third place).

Allen proving valuable at linebacker for Pirates

If Granbury senior Malik Allen had his choice, he might never come off the football field.

But playing both offense and defense as hard as Allen does produces fatigue – and that does not lend itself to getting the most out of his considerable talents, according to coach Scotty Pugh.

Last season, Allen rushed for 1,015 yards and 17 touchdowns on a Pirate squad that had a 9-2 record.

Aledo sweeps Lady Pirates

The 11th-ranked Granbury Lady Pirates didn’t seem to be playing their best volleyball Tuesday.

That may have had a lot to do with how well their opponent and chief rival – third-ranked Aledo – was performing.

The Lady Pirates (6-2 in district, 24-9 overall) struggled early before staging a rally in the third set and ultimately falling to Aledo, 25-16, 25-13, 2-22 in the James Wann Sports Center.

Pirates set for area

The Granbury Pirates halted a three-match losing skid in team tennis on Tuesday, dominating Crowley, 18-1.

The win closed out District 8-5A play, in which the Pirates won six of their seven matches.

Coach Tyson Stewart’s Pirates now advance to the first round of the area tournament, which will be in Granbury on Tuesday, Oct.

Golfers fourth in local event

The Granbury High School varsity boys golf Purple Team took fourth place Monday in the Brazos Classic, the Pirates’ own annual 36-hole event staged at both Pecan Plantaion Golf Course and at Nufcracker Golf Course.

The Pirates finished with a team score of 656, ahead of Keller’s 699.

Class 6A Amarillo Tascosa won the team title with a 612, followed by Mansfield Legacy at 650 and Arlington Heights with a 651.

Indian summer fishing arrives

This last two weeks has been cycling between hot and cool. In fact, the temperature was approaching 100 Tuesday.

But we all know the trend is toward cooler temperatures and cooler water, and that is a good thing.

These so-called Indian summer days slow the cool-down process and actually can put predators back in the summer or late fall mode.
