Pirates lead early, but fall to Denton, 48-28

The Granbury Pirates were enjoying a 14-0 first-quarter lead at home over Denton High Friday, but that was before four turnovers and a wrecking ball named Xavier Scott crashed the party.

Scott rushed for 306 yards on 35 carries and scored five touchdowns as the Broncos rallied for a 48-28 nondistrict football victory on Johnny Perkins Field at Pirate Stadium.

Lady Pirates fall to Midway

The sixth-ranked Granbury Lady Pirates grabbed a 2-0 lead in sets over visiting Waco Midway Friday night, but the Lady Panthers rallied to secure a 21-25, 12-25, 25-15, 25-22, 15-11 victory at GHS.

The loss moved Granbury to 17-7 on the season entering last night’s home match against Weatherford, also nondistrict.

GHS cross country season opens

The varsity girls finished in 11th place while the boys were 15th Thursday as the Granbury High School cross country teams opened their 2014 season at the Gingerbread Jamboree in Denton.

GHS cross country coach Amber Ward said her team is off to a good start.

There were 17 varsity girls teams competing and 23 boys teams.

CCA rallies for win

The Cornerstone Christian Academy Crusaders leveled their six-man football season record at 1-1, rallying for a 52-40 triumph on a stormy Friday night against Nazarene Christian in Fort Worth.

The Crusaders got three touchdowns from Josh Beaird and two from Zac Olsen, while quarterback Tanner Ives threw four TD strikes.

Cornerstone fell behind 20-6 in the first quarter, but outscored Nazarene Christian 40-13 over the next two quarters.

Tolar rolls for first win

After last week’s heartbreaking overtime loss to Crawford, the Tolar Rattlers bounced back in dominating fashion Friday for a 41-27 nondistrict football victory at Comanche.

Tolar quarterback Dakota Endsley had a tremendous game, throwing for 325 yards and 5 touchdowns while running for one more.

After holding a slim 14-13 halftime lead, Tolar stepped up its game on all fronts in the second half for the win, which improved the Rattlers to 1-1 on the season.

Pirates deal out one-game suspensions

The Granbury Pirates went into Friday’s nondistrict football game at home against Denton High School with five players out of action.

In addition to starting quarterback Brody Ables, who is out for an extended time with an injury, four Pirates were suspended for the game. That’s a result of a scuffle between multiple players in last Friday’s 69-7 loss to Azle.

The Lady Pirates, on top two sets to none, saw visiting Stephenville take the lead for most of the third set before Granbury surged back to secure a 25-14, 25-20, 25-23 home triumph.

Two types of line can be useful

Every trip I take, I get questioned about what line I use.

I generally use a combination of monofilament for the main line and a fluorocarbon leader. These two together are a great option considering the advantages of both.

Fluorocarbon line comes from a polymer that has a refractive index that is almost the same as that of water.
