Lady Pirates roll, 70-51

It wasn’t a championship win, but Granbury Lady Pirates head basketball coach Steve Schmidt had a little fun with his players after Friday night’s game.

Senior Bryce Frank, who led Granbury with 21 points, said that the coach sprayed water from a bottle when he came in to speak to them after the 70-51 District 8-5A triumph in the GHS James Wann Sports Center.

Rattlers remain unbeaten in district

Tolar’s boys basketball squad remained unbeaten in district play, overwhelming Ranger 75-17 Tuesday night at home.

Coach Kent Caruthers’ Rattlers continued their remarkable turnaround. The Rattlers had a disastrous start this season – due in large part by multiple injuries – and have progressed to grabbing the early lead in the District 10-2A race.

The state-ranked North Central Texas Academy girls blitzed Brownwood Victory Life, 45-6, Tuesday night at home for their second district basketball win.

The NCTA girls (10-3) are No. 13 in the latest Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools rankings for small private schools.

The Lady Pioneers are now 2-0 in their District 2-A Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools alignment.

Pirates trip Joshua on road

The Granbury Pirates got a double-double from post Mitchell May on the way to a 55-34 road basketball victory Tuesday night over Joshua, advancing to 3-1 in District 8-5A play.

Coach David Breazeale, whose Pirates improved to 16-3 overall, called it a “solid” performance although the team struggled once again with its shooting percentage.

Lady Pirates fall in OT, 55-52

The Granbury girls basketball team lost a slim lead Tuesday night in Joshua as the Lady Owls forced the district game into overtime and won 55-52.

Coach Steve Schmidt’s Lady Pirates led the Lady Owls 26-24 at halftime and 38-35 at the close of the third quarter.

But Joshua had a 5-2 scoring edge in the overtime to improve to 4-2 in league play.

GHS 3rd in swim meet

The Granbury boys placed second and the GHS girls took third Jan. 10 in the Chaps Winter Invitational swim meet held Jan. 10 at O.D. Wyatt High School in Fort Worth.

In the combined score totals, Granbury was third behind Mansfield Lake Ridge and Fort Worth Paschal.

The boys team placed higher than any other Class 5A squad in the meet.

Lipan girls stomp Gorman, 87-36

The Lipan Lady Indians bounced back in a big way from their district-opening loss to rival Strawn with an 87-36 road win over Gorman Tuesday night.

Lanie Roberts made 16 of her 19 field goal attempts to lead Lipan with 39 points.

Roberts was held to 15 points in the Lady Indians’ 64-60 home loss to Strawn on Jan.

The Pirates open their regular season tonight at 7, playing host to Vidor at Pirate Stadium. Coach David Winkleman’s Lady Pirates are opening their season away from home in a tournament, the Lubbock Invitational.
