Brawner taking company to state swimming

It’s time for Kaylee Brawner to make her annual trip to Austin.

And this time she’s taking some family and a few friends with her.

Brawner, a Granbury High junior, qualified for the University Interscholastic League Class 5A State Swimming and Diving Meet for a third consecutive season.

She won both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events at this past weekend’s Class 5A Region II Meet at Mansfield ISD Natatorium.

Granbury tennis opens spring in solid way

The Granbury High tennis team got the spring started by hosting their own tournament this past weekend.

The Pirates came away with a championship, two second-place finishes and a third place.

The Boys Doubles team of Bryten Otting and Beau Pritchard took the top spot in the A Division.

In the Boys Singles competition, Anthony Barnett came away with a runner-up finish in the consolation bracket of the A Division.

Cooper Wallace is one of 27 members of the Granbury High swim team that is competing this weekend in the Class 5A Region II Meet in Mansfield. The top finishers in each event will qualify for state, along with a wild-card entry, the best second-place finisher in each event from across the state.

Granbury junior Kaylee Brawner was named the Girls Swimmer of the Meet at the recent District 7-5A Meet. It was her third straight year to win the honor and she is seeking a third straight trip to state.

Warmer weather could bring on early spawn

Water temperatures on our North Texas lakes have been rising due to the couple of warm spells. Winter is not over, but we just haven’t had a real cold winter…yet.

The warmer water will bring on the spawn earlier if this pattern continues. Water temperatures this past weekend on Granbury were from the upper 40s in the morning to the low 50s.

High school rodeo competition has resumed following the holiday break, and several area competitors are among those chasing spots in the finals of their respective organizations.

In the Texas High School Rodeo Association, Granbury’s Paden Bray is seventh in the All-Around Cowboy standings. Wyatt Bray is 15th.

The Granbury Lady Pirates freshmen downed visiting Cleburne Tuesday in a District 8-5A basketball game, 41-27.

Lani Hickey led Granbury with 19 points.

Realignment puts Tolar with tough foes

Tolar’s new football and basketball districts include teams that have had remarkable success over the years.

Tolar’s football district (4-3A Division II) features Cisco, Eastland, Bangs, Coleman and Dublin.

Cisco will enter the 2016 footbal season with a streak of 30 straight district wins under head coach Brent West. The squad has compiled a 62-6 record from 2011 through 2015.

Girls pull away late in big win

The scenario was simple.

Lose Tuesday night and the Granbury Lady Pirates could basically start focusing on softball and track seasons.

Their hopes for the playoffs would be about as good as Donald Trump being elected president of Mexico.

But the Lady Pirates did win, pulling away late for a 54-49 victory against visiting Cleburne.
