GHS tennis team to open season Thursday

Lady Pirates No. 4 in TGCA preseason poll

Granbury is ranked fourth in the state in the 2014 Texas Girls Coaches Association’s preseason Class 5A volleyball poll. The Lady Pirates, who also were ranked as high as No. 4 last season, reached the regional championship game before falling to eventual state champion Amarillo High. They finished with an all-time best GHS volleyball record of 41-6.…

Lady Pirates see road action in scrimmages

Granbury High School’s volleyball squad got its first taste of competition Friday and Saturday, at Haltom City and at Trinity in timed scrimmages with no scores kept. They played for an hour and a half against Haltom. On Saturday they took on South Grand Prairie, Burleson Centennial and Trinity. “It was a great opportunity for me to see different people and try some different lineups,” GHS head coach Tammy Clark said.…

Pirates close first week of football with intrasquad scrimmage

The Granbury Pirates finished up their first week of preseason football practice with an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday morning at Pirate Stadium. The defensive units dominated overall, picking off several passes and recovering a fumble. GHS head coach Scotty Pugh said that the first and second teams ran about 16 plays each, and the third team ran about eight plays in the scrimmage, which included some down-and-distance snaps and lasted a little over an hour in all.…

HCN Junior Golf Tournament event Wednesday

Entries can still be submitted for the final Hood County News Junior Golf Tournament Series event of the summer for golfers under age 18, which will be Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Granbury Country Club, 1611 Rockview Dr., in Granbury. There is no entry fee for Hood County residents. Out-of-county golfers pay a $10 fee.…

Football squads start practicing in pads Friday

Temperatures are starting to hit 100 degrees just in time to coincide with the first day of practice in pads allowed by the UIL for Texas schoolboy football teams. Granbury High School and Tolar High School will both be wearing pads in their morning workouts on Friday, Aug. 8. After spending the week at a football camp in Parker County, Cornerstone Christian Academy will stage a midnight practice Friday that should last 30-40 minutes.…

Tolar football workouts open with 61 so far

A total of 61 players, freshmen through seniors, arrived Monday morning for the first day of Tolar High School’s preseason football practice, coach Mike Franklin said. SEALS finish fourth overall in TAAF state meet

The Granbury SEALS finished in fourth place overall in the team standings as the Texas Amateur Athletics Federation Games of Texas at Bryan/College Station came to a close, coach Janet Steenberge said.
