Granbury, Tolar set for regular-season football openers

Both of Hood County’s 11-man varsity football teams open the 2014 regular season Friday night, Aug. 29, with nondistrict games. Granbury, a member of District 8-5A, will be at Hornet Field in Azle for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against the District 5-5A Hornets. Coach Scotty Pugh’s Pirates were 9-2 last season, and reached the Class 4A playoffs for a fourth consecutive year.…

Six-man NCTA, Cornerstone begin their seasons Friday

The area’s two six-man football teams both begin their 2014 seasons Friday night, Aug. 29. Cornerstone Christian Academy, led by their new coach Chris Eichenhorst, will play at Trinity Christian Academy (of Willow Park) at the middle school field in Aledo starting at 7:30 p.m. The Crusaders were 9-2 last year, which marked a school record for victories in a season, and they qualified for the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools playoffs.…

Granbury JV, 9th graders begin regular-season football Thursday

Three current members of the fourth-ranked Granbury High School Lady Pirates are on lists identifying elite volleyball players nationwide, according to coach Tammy Clark. Senior Aubrey Ezell is on the Under Armour High School All-America Watch List. NCTA closes out football scrimmages

The North Central Texas Academy Pioneers completed their scrimmage schedule Friday, taking on Iredell and Blanket, in six-man football action at Iredell. Coach Kirby Rasco said his first-teamers scored a touchdown against Blanket on a 43-yard pass to Cole Rasco, thrown by Nash Siachetema. GHS tennis team rallies to beat Weatherford

The Granbury High School tennis team needed a rally Friday and got one, defeating Class 6A Weatherford Friday on the road, 10-9. The Pirates had traveled to face another 6A school on Thursday, at Midlothian. Lady Pirates win their tournament second straight year

The eighth-ranked Granbury Lady Pirates won their own Granbury Classic Chevrolet Volleyball Tournament championship trophy for the second year in a row, overcoming a tough Class 6A team from Copperas Cove in the title game early Saturday evening at James Wann Sports Center. Granbury lost the first game to the Lady Bulldogs, 26-24, but won the next two, 25-20, 25-14.…
