Area football teams to begin practice Monday

Granbury High School, Tolar and North Central Texas Academy will begin preseason football practice Monday morning. Coach Scotty Pugh’s GHS Pirates will arrive at 7 a.m. for equipment sizing and have practice through 10 a.m. Tolar’s Rattlers, led by Mike Franklin, will be practicing form 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Coach Kirby Rasco’s NCTA Pioneers will be working out from 8-11.…

Benson wins collegiate golf tournament

Former Granbury High golfer Travis Benson, now playing for New Mexico State University, won the Oaks Course Classic at the TPC Course in San Antonio, part of the Texas Collegiate Amateur Tour. Benson shot a three-round total of 223 to win by two strokes. He opened with a 9-over-par 81, followed with a 3-under-par 69, and closed with a 1-over-par 73.…

Ninety-five swimmers, six track athletes headed to Games of Texas

The Granbury SEALS swim team is sending 95 members to this weekend’s Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Games of Texas in Bryan-College Station. SEALS qualify record amount for state

Continuing their best summer in team history, the Granbury SEALS qualified 95 swimmers (49 male, 46 female) to the upcoming Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Games of Texas next weekend. Hunter ed class

July 20, 2014

A Texas Hunter Education Class will be conducted Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hood County Courthouse Annex meeting room, 1410 W. Pearl St. Every hunter, including out-of-state, born after Sept. 2, 1971 must successfully complete a hunter education training course. Tolar coaching great to be honored Saturday

Former Tolar coach Jim Coleman will be inducted into the Six-Man Coaching Hall of Fame Saturday. Ceremonies will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls as part of the Six-Man All-Star Game. Coleman coached the Rattlers from 1962-76, posting a 102-46-3 record. His teams won seven district championships in a time when teams had to win district to advance to the playoffs. Three times Coleman’s teams won 11 games, which is still a Tolar record.…

Gymnasts off to nationals

Three area gymnasts will be competing in the Level 8-10 USA Gymnastics Tumbling and Trampoline Nationals this week in Louisville, Kentucky. They are Emma Grace Brown, 10; Madison Pearson, 12;  and Rachel Torres, 13. It is the third year for each to advance to nationals, but their first time to compete in Level 8.…
