GHS boys top Burleson; girls lose

District 8-5A basketball play began tonight for the Granbury Pirates at Burleson High with a 64-53 victory on the road. The GHS Lady Pirates lost to Burleson, 49-35. The Pirates had been idle since taking home third place from the Van Griffith Kia Basketball Classic on Dec. 13. Tonight’s win moved them to 12-2 overall and 1-0 in district.…

Waskom beats Newton, 41-22, in 3A, Div. II state final

Waskom defeated Newton tonight in Arlington, 41-22, to win the Class 3A, Div. II state football championship, featuring a coaching staff that includes both a former Granbury player and a former Granbury High School assistant coach. Jeremy Kubiak, a 34-year-old, 1999 Granbury High School graduate, along with former GHS assistant coach Greg Pearson, are assistant coaches for Waskom (15-1). Kubiak  is the offensive coordinator. This is Kubiak’s fourth season coaching at Waskom, which was 0-10 the season before he arrived.…

Lady Pirates tie for 5th in final volleyball poll, Tolar 17th

The Granbury Lady Pirates are tied for fifth place with three other teams in the final Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A volleyball rankings, which were released this week. Coach Scotty Miller’s Tolar Lady Rattlers are in a tie with 16 other teams for 17th in the final Class 2A rankings. Coach Tammy Clark’s District 8-5A runner-up Lady Pirates reached the regional finals for the second year in a row, and had a 33-10 season record after being eliminated by district champion Aledo.…

Ryan, Denton gain top honors as Tolar leads in all-district nods

Three members of the Granbury Pirates football team were selected as first-team all-District 8-5A for the 2014 season, by vote of the league’s coaches. The three, all seniors, are inside linebacker Malik Allen, wide receiver Nick Doughty and tight end Thomas Weaver. Second-team all-district performers for the Pirates are: Bailey Dunn, at offensive tackle; Eugene Geis, a running back named as a utility player; safety Davis McDuff; Jacob Rose, named as place-kicker; outside linebacker Evan Sledge; and cornerback Iza Villareal.…
