New Tolar baseball coach has team set for run at playoffs

The Tolar Rattlers returned to a winning baseball season in 2013.

Now, with a new head coach, they are ready for a return to the playoffs, somewhere they haven’t been since moving up to Class 2A in the 2011 season.

Darrell Hogan takes over for the departed Trey Holcomb, who left to be an assistant coach in the Fort Worth school district.

Rattlers FB trio gets elite honor

Three all-district members of the 2013 Tolar Rattlers football team have earned additional postseason honors.

A Texarkana-based website. www.Texashsfootball.com, released its Class 2A Division II, Region III-IV Elite Team that includes senior end Kaleb Crawford as a member of the first-team defense. Also, senior quarterback Corbin Wood and junior defensive back Dakota Endsley are on the second-team offense and defense, respectively.

Rattlers win second consecutive contest

The Tolar boys earned another District 10-2A basketball victory Friday night, downing Keene 61-53.

The Rattlers got 17 points from Dakota Endsley and 15 rebounds from T.J. Foster.

The Rattlers (3-15, 3-8 in district) continued in their recent efforts to work the ball inside to get better shooting opportunities and it has been paying off, coach Kent Caruthers said.

Tolar coaches pleased with realignment slot

Tolar football coach Mike Franklin said it should be interesting to see how the new district football alignment announced Monday morning will work out.

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) shook things up with its biennial realigment Monday.

Tolar will still be, in effect, in Class 2A. Technically, the school dropped down one classification.

Tolar girls stay in hunt

The Tolar girls struggled Friday night in a 34-21 loss to District 10-2A basketball leader Grandview, but the Lady Rattlers still had playoff hopes entering last night’s regular-season finale.

If Keene lost to Grandview as expected last night, then the Lady Rattlers will play a one-game district play-in game against Keene to determine the fourth-place seed in the playoffs.

Rattlers get close win

February 5, 2014

The Tolar boys drastically picked up their shooting proficiency Friday night and also picked up their second win of the season in a 46-45 road victory over third-place Granbview in District 10-2A basketball action.

Tolar (2-15, 2-8) hit 47 percent overall from the field (20-of-43).

Rattlers coach Kent Caruthers said the Rattlers had not shot over 30 percent this season.

Rio Vista erupted for 25 points in the second quarter Tuesday night in Tolar on the way to a 71-51 District 10-2A boys basketball victory over the Rattlers.

Heston Buckalew and Dakota Endsley scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, to pace Tolar (1-15, 1-8). Hunter Ryan added 12 points, and teammate T.J.

Lady Rattlers get clutch win to stay in chase

The Tolar girls got 19 points from Shelby Nunley as they rolled to a 54-42 District 10-2A basketball triumph at home Tuesday night over Rio Vista, giving the Lady Rattlers continued hope in possibly securing a playoff berth.

The Lady Rattlers (12-11, 5-6 in district) are now a half game ahead of Keene (4-6 in district) in the battle for the fourth and final playoff seed.

Loss leaves Lady Rattlers needing help

State-ranked Maypearl handed the Tolar girls a 58-39 road setback Friday night that made the Lady Rattlers’ road to a possible playoff spot a little tougher.

The Lady Rattlers (11-11, 4-6 in district) saw Maypearl, ranked 25th in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, pull away in the second quarter to take a 26-14 lead at intermission.

Lady Rattlers keep postseason hopes alive

January 25, 2014

The basketball playoff hopes for the Tolar Lady Rattlers improved Tuesday night with their 59-46 District 10-2A home victory over Whitney.

Hannah Peregrino was the top scorer for Tolar (11-10, 4-5 in district) with 16 points, and added seven steals. Shelby Nunley contributed 12 points – including a pair of 3-point buckets.
