Don was born April 22, 1944 in Fort Worth, Texas, to Dan and Florine Coates. Don graduated from Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth, Texas in 1962, later graduating from TCU.

Virgil was born to Leo and Pauline Gardner in Pravieberg, Iowa. He worked as a farm helper all through his early life until he became an usher at the local Moore Theater as well as setting bowling pins and attending school.
