Texas House slated for third vote today on campus carry bill

State Rep. Allen Fletcher’s (R-Cypress) HB 972 – also known as the “campus carry” bill – passed the Texas House on its second reading Saturday, with the third and final vote scheduled for sometime Monday (May 6). The bill is similar to SB 182 filed by Sen. Brian Birdwell (R-Granbury), but that bill has received no traction in the senate. A staffer in Rep. Fletcher’s office told the Hood County News that the primary differences in the two bills that allow colleges and universities to let concealed handgun license holders store or carry weapons on campus is that the representative’s version includes an “opt-out” component, as well as an “opt-in” for private institutions.
