Members of the Commissioners Court are explaining that the raises given to about 50 Sheriff’s Office employees – viewed by some county officials as a violation of the step pay plan – was actually a base pay increase for positions that have the highest turnover. The Hood County Sheriff’s Office has long had the lowest starting pay around for patrol deputies and jailers. Court members said the moved saves the county money because there were costs involved in new employees constantly being trained. They are hoping that the slightly higher pay will help with retention.
