Lady Pirates’ Andrews announces retirement

Granbury Lady Pirate basketball coach Leta Andrews announced her retirement following Saturday’s 40-39 Class 4A area round basketball loss to Wichita Falls Rider at Jacksboro High School. Andrews said the retirement will be official May 31. The 76-year-old Andrews is the winningest basketball coach ever with 1,416 victories over 51 seasons. She won a state championship coaching at Corpus Christi Calallen in 1990 and has led 14 teams to the state tournament. She was also named the Walt Disney Teacher of the Year in 1993. She is also honored in several halls of fame, including the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
