Dana Vollmer sets Olympic record, advances to semifinals

Granbury’s Dana Vollmer swam an Olympic-record time of 56.25 seconds in the preliminary round of the women’s 100-meter butterfly in the London Olympics Saturday (July 28). She bested the previous Olympic mark of 56.61 and moved into the the semifinals, which will be held at 12:40 p.m. Granbury time. Vollmer entered the Olympics as the top seed afte she swam a time of 56.42 at the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. Finals are at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. She will also swim on the 800 freestyle relay Wednesday, Aug. 1 with prelims at 4:26 a.m. and finals at 2:57 p.m. The world record in the women’s 100 fly is 56.06.
