County Judge: Tax rate increase coming

July 30, 2013

The county has lost close to $110 million in property valuations – and that’s going to mean a tax rate increase, County Judge Darrell Cockerham said Monday (July 29). A special meeting of the Commissioners Court is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday (July 30) in the Central Jury Room at the Justice Center to discuss the proposed tax rate, and for commissioners to begin the process of whittling down the budgetary “wish lists” of elected and appointed officials to keep the tax rate as low as possible. Cockerham said that the effective tax rate is 37 cents per $100 of valuaton – about 2 1/2 cents higher than the rate currently in place.
