Tolar sending two to state track meet

May 1, 2013

Tolar pole vaulters Reagan Mabery and Rodie Brister both advanced to the state track meet, and the Rattlers missed out on a chance to qualify a boys relay team after a controversial call by an official.

Both Brister and Mabery qualified for the state meet on Friday with their performances in the Region II-2A meet held at Tarleton State University. Brister posted a height of 14 feet, while Mabery reached 11 feet.

Tolar head track coach Gregg Lee said that, overall, the boys and girls competed well in a tough field.

“We had some good, and we had a little bit of bad,” Lee said. “It’s nice to have two of them (going to Austin). I wish we could have had a little more. Just about everybody ran their best of jumped their best.”

On Saturday, Lee said Tolar’s 1,600-meter boys relay team (Kaleb Gilliam, Corbin Wood, Grant Winston, Cory Solomon) were leading on the third leg when two other runners got tangled up and stumbled. Meet officials disqualified the Tolar relay team as a result.

“We were in first place, and it was really unfortunate,” said Lee, who said he felt the official who made the call was not in position to do so. “Grant didn’t do anything wrong,” Lee said.

He said Grant finshed his leg, despite pulling a hamstring.

Lee said the boys 800 relay team (Blayne Denton, Garrett Winston, B.J. Dollins, Cory Solomon) ran the fastest time Tolar has had in four years.

“It looks like Reagan is starting to peak at the right time, it really does,” Lee said.

Garrett Winston had a shot at advancing to state as a wild card entry after placing third in the triple jump with 43-11. But Lee said that someone from Region III had a better third-place distance.

The state meet will be May 10-11 (Friday-Saturday). The girls pole vault is set for that Friday afternoon, and the boys pole vault will be the next morning.
