Tolar runner keeps family tradition going

October 31, 2012

Hank Jr. probably had no idea that a family in North Texas would live up to his song when he wrote “Family Tradition.”

But that’s exactly what Tim Williams of the Tolar boys cross country team is doing.

Williams finished fifth in the District 10-2A Meet at Lake Whitney State Park. He clocked a time of 18:04 over the 3.1-mile course.

By advancing to regionals, Williams joins his older siblings Jacob, Caleb and Rachel in doing so. Each of them also qualified for state, Jacob and Caleb in Class A and Rachel in 2A.

Williams was the only Tolar boy to compete at district. The Lady Rattlers had a full contingent and placed fifth as a team.

Williams will compete in the Region II Meet Saturday at Arlington’s Vandergriff Park. First-year Tolar coach Benita Carlton believes the tough district competition will have him fully prepared for the meet.

“We are in a pretty tough district for cross country, and I think it’s an advantage for Tim going to regionals,” she said. “He has ran with the top three runners in our district at every meet, so I’m excited to see what he will do at regionals.”

That includes the top two runners from district, both from Whitney. Trevor Montgomery posted a 16:53 and Marco Rodriguez clocked a 17:19.

Carlton was pleased with the performance of the Lady Rattlers, whom she said all ran personal-best times.

Morgan Thomas was 14th with a time of 14:28 over 2 miles to lead the way for the young Lady Rattlers.

“I’m excited about next season,” said Carlton. “We are young and returning six. For some of these girls, it was their first time ever to run cross country.”

This is the sixth consecutive year Tolar will have a runner at state cross county – all Williams. Rachel is the only girl from Tolar to ever reach state in the event, having done so in the previous two seasons
