Tolar, Granbury avoid tourney blankings

December 5, 2012

Still playing without their major weapon, the Granbury Lady Pirates managed one win in four games in the Cowtown Classic basketball tournament.

But coach Leta Andrews is optimistic that when 6-4 post Lilley Vander Zee does return from her back injury, the experience of playing without her will make the Lady Pirates an overall better team.

“We’ve had Lilley for three years, and when she’s not there we really miss her,” said Andrews.

“But I’m so proud of the girls for playing so hard without Lilley. They showed a lot of grit.”

The Lady Pirates (5-8) dropped their first two before besting San Marcos 50-43 behind a career-high 21 points from Morgan Northcutt. They had only 16 turnovers, 22 rebounds distributed among seven players, seven steals split among six players, and a dozen assists split among six.

“We played improved basketball, and I’m tickled at how hard the girls are playing,” said Andrews.

The Lady Pirates ended the tournament with a 42-35 loss to Keller Timber Creek, with Northcutt again leading in scoring with 14. In fact, Northcutt led in scoring in three of the four games.

Seven players combined to grab 19 rebounds, and turnovers were cut to eight.

The first two games, however, were real struggles for the Lady Pirates. They fell 52-36 to L.D. Bell and 36-28 to Mansfield Summit.

Bell forced Granbury into 36 turnovers, almost as many as the next three games combined (42). In contrast, the Lady Pirates only managed four steals against the Lady Raiders, followed by just four against Summit.

It was Granbury’s second close loss to Summit this season. They lost to the defending champions in overtime, 46-43, when the teams met in Granbury to open the season.

LADY RATTLERS WIN

FINALE AT DUBLIN

After dropping their first two games in close fashion, the Tolar Lady Rattlers had no trouble in blasting Zephyr 39-13 for seventh.

The Lady Rattlers (4-5) blanked Zephyr 9-0 in the opening quarter and were in command thereafter.

Hannah Peregrino led Tolar with a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds).

The Lady Rattlers began the tournament with a 41-38 loss to Glen Rose. That was followed with a 43-37 loss to Goldthwaite.

In both games, one quarter made the difference. Glen Rose went on a 12-6 run in the third and Goldthwaite ended with a 13-6 run.

The Lady Rattlers won despite struggling with their shooting (15-for-47, 0-for-6 on 3-pointers, 9-for-20 free throws). They did, however, register 13 steals that were divided among five players and led by Peregrino with six.

In the loss to Glen Rose, the Lady Rattlers made as many 3-point baskets (5-for-15) as they did 2-pointers (5-for-23) and had a higher shooting percentage from long range.

They were done in, however, by 24 turnovers opposite just two steals.
