Tolar’s basketball girls are entering the 2013-14 season hoping to find the consistency that eluded them last year when injuries late in the season contributed to missing a playoff berth from District 10-2A.
The Lady Rattlers were 15-15 overall and 6-6 in district last season, but have six returning varsity players, so second-year coach Benita Carlton said she has high hopes.
“We were two games short of making the playoffs last year,” Carlton said. “We were hit with injuries late in the season and could never find any consistency. I think we are more determined knowing how close we were last season, not to let our playoff hopes get taken away from us this year.”
The top scorer and rebounder among the returning lettermen is 5-9 junior forward/post Hannah Peregrino, who averaged 11 points and eight rebounds to earn first-team all-district status last season.
Another junior, Meredith Caudle, was a second-team all-district performer at point guard.
The list of other key players includes 5-8 senior post Carly Knapp, 5-9 junior post Michaela Phillips, and 5-7 junior guard Shelby Nunley.
“This group works really well together, and worked really hard this summer playing lots of basketball to get better for the upcoming season,” Carlton said. “Carly Knapp wil help us out this year with her leadership as well as in the post area. Michaela Phillips sat out most of last season with an injury, but has been showing some promise in the post area for this season.”
Others listed on the varsity roster entering the season are senior guard Chelsea Mosher, along with juniors Liz Bonnell and Staci Ashley, both posts, plus sophomore guards Marlee Thomas and Laura Anderson.
Carlton said she expects the district to be a tough one, once again, with last year’s runner-up, Maypearl, returning “everybody” – as is Grandview.
“Godley will be good again,” Carlton also noted.
