At the midway point of their District 10-2A basketball slate, the Tolar Lady Rattlers are in the playoff mix.
But they could have been a lot better off in the standings had they not dropped a 42-35 home contest to league-leading Grandview Tuesday.
The Lady Rattlers (10-8 overall) fell to 3-3 in district. Grandview, meanwhile, maintained its hold on first place by improving to 5-0.
Maypearl is a game behind, followed by Godley at 3-2, Tolar, and Keene right behind the Lady Rattlers at 2-3.
Tolar hosts Keene Tuesday to start the second half of district after the Lady Rattlers had last night off.
The top four teams in district will advance to the playoffs.
“Had we limited turnovers, made free throws, and rebounded this would have been a whole different ballgame,” said Tolar coach Benita Carlton. “We executed defensively, but then let them have second-chance shots by not rebounding.”
Grandview made more free throws (going 18-for-27) than Tolar attempted (8-for-16). They also held the Lady Rattlers to 25 rebounds, including just three on the offensive side.
Tolar also turned the ball over 30 times.
Grandview was held to just 10 field goals, with four being 3-pointers.
Hannah Peregrino led Tolar with 16 points and nine rebounds.
In opening the game with a 14-2 run over the course of the opening quarter, Grandview made almost as many points from the free throw line (6) as it did from the field (8).
In the final quarter, Grandview ended with a 12-6 run after Tolar had closed to with 30-29. The Lady Zebras hit just two field goals, but were 8-for-12 at the free throw line.
“I’m pleased with how we’re executing defensively. We need to continue this into the second half of district,” said Carlton. “What we must do better is limit turnovers offensively and have composure, play our game.”
