Tolar advances 19

April 20, 2013

The Tolar boys easily out-distanced the field Wednesday to grab the team title in the Class 2A Area track and field meet helt at Godley High School while the Lady Rattlers finished seventh overall.

The top four individuals in each event qualified for the 2A Region II Meet April 26-27 at Tarleton State University in Stephenville. The top two in each region will advance to the state meet in Austin, along with a wild-card entry, the third-place finisher with the best time/distance/height from across the state’s four regions.

Taking 20 athletes – 19 plus one alternate – to the regional meet “is a big deal,” Tolar track coach Gregg Lee said, noting that competitors had to deal with winds gusting up to 25-30 mph. He said that made it a particularly rough day for those in the running events.

Lee said he entered the meet expecting his boys to perform this well in the running events, but the Rattlers surprised him with how well they did in the field events – winning three events and finishing second in two others.

Those standout performances included Garrett Winston breaking his own school record in the triple jump, with a distance of 44-8-1/2. Also, teammate Rodie Brister’s winning pole vault of 13-6 equaled his own school record.

The Rattlers scored 130 points to win the team title by a margin of 36 over Boyd. Tolar’s girls finished in seventh place with 45.5 points.

Three of Tolar’s boys won their respective events, and the Rattlers also won the 1600-meter relay.

Walker Shelton of Tolar won the long jump with personal best distance of 20 feet, 11 inches.

The winning 1600 relay was comprised of Cory Solomon, Grant Winston, Kaleb Gilliam and Corbin Wood, posting a time of 3:32.120.

Tolar’s boys also placed second in four events, with Solomon in the 100, Gilliam in the 400, Hunter Ryan in the discus and Dalton Shaw in the high jump. It was Shaw’s first time to clear 6 feet, Lee said.

Reagan Mabery of Tolar earned second place in both the 100 hurdles and in the pole vault to lock down two individual spots at regional.

“Our girls competed well,” Lee said, noting that the oveall girls field was exceptionally tough. “You’ll see a bunch of them (from several schools at the area meet) do well at the regional meet.”

Tolar has had least one competitor at state since 2007.
