The Granbury Pirates’ annual spring football contests will be held Friday at Granbury Middle School Field. The subvarsity will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity to immediately follow.

The games are being played at GMS because of the installation of the new turf on Johnny Perkins Field at Pirate Stadium.

Pirate head coach Scotty Pugh said about 200 players going into grades 9-12 reported for workouts.

The Pirates are coming off a third consecutive playoff appearance. They open the 2013 season on the road at Wichita Falls on April 29. Their first of four home games is against Fort Worth North Side on Sept. 6.


The Granbury SEALS swim team has started registration for the upcoming summer season. Swimmers can sign up and try out Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Dana Vollmer Municipal Swim Center (City Park pool).

The first day of practice is June 3 for returning team members and June 4 for newcomers. The season begins June 8 at Trophy Club, with a meet at Weatherford June 14, and back-to-back in Granbury on June 22 and 29.

Texas Amateur Athletic Federation regionals are July 13-14 in Keller and TAAF State is July 25-28 in Corpus Christi.

The Hood County Flyers, a Texas Amateur Athletic Federation track club, is forming for summer competitiion. The team will consist of boys and girls ages 8-18 and will compete in TAAF meets around the area and state.

Cost is $25 per child, and each member will be responsible for the individual entrance fees, about $5 or $6 per meet.

The first meet of the season is June 8 in Mansfield.

The annual Hood County News Junior Golf Tournament series will resume this summer with four tournaments.

The first is scheduled for June 12, with two in July (10 and 31) and the final on Aug. 14.

The tournament is open for boys and girls ages 6-17.

Students who will participate in the Granbury ISD athletic programs during the 2013-14 school year will have an opportunity to get their mandatory physical exams during sessions sponsored by the Lake Granbury Medical Center.

The exams will be given today (May 22) from 2-6 p.m. at Granbury Middle School.

These sessions are for students in grades 6-8. Students in grades 9-11 may also participate, but will be assigned a location and time by the athletic trainers.

Cost is $20 cash.

Athletic physicals are required by the University Interscholastic League and GISD and must be completed before a student may participate in any practices or games.

This event is not mandatory, and all parents and students have the option of completing this requirement at the medical provider of their choice.

Athletic physical packets must be completed by the parent or guardian prior to the exam. Forms are available at Granbury High School, Crossland Ninth Grade Center, AMS, GMS, both training at GHS, and the GISD athletic office. They may also be found on the GISD web site at

Texas boater education certification courses are scheduled at Granbury Regional Airport. The seven-hour class is highly recommended for all boaters.

Texas state law requires operaters ages 13-17 complete the course.

Each class lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break. Reservations are recommended.

Parents attending with their child will not be charged unless they also want certification.

Each person receiving certification must provide a social security number.
